Lodos

Akita · Male · Senior · 14 years

American Akita Age: 2020-09-22 Can live with other dogs: to be assessed with a stable female Can live with cats: ? Can live in an apartment: no, a house with garden Can live with children: yes, from age 14 Lodos was given up by his previous owners because they no longer wanted him. He was purchased as a puppy because he looked so cute, but small puppies grow into adult dogs and in his case: large, adult dogs. He lived in the garden and for the last three years there was hardly anything done with him. He had to fend for himself and entertain himself. After a behavioral observation at home, he came to live with us. Although this was difficult for him at first, he can now experience what it is like to receive contact and love again, something he clearly appreciates. Lodos is still a dog who likes to do his own thing. He has learned that and it often fits the character of an Akita. In new situations, he mainly explores and shows little fear. He sniffs around calmly and immediately checks if there are no nice or fun things on the table. He loves toys and food. He jumps up against you regularly to make it clear that he would like to have what you have in your hands. With his 45 kg, it is wise to stand firm. However, with clear guidance, he also understands that he gets something when he sits nicely. He knows the commands 'sit' and 'paw', enjoys attention and comes for this regularly himself to seek contact. For Lodos we are looking for a house with a garden, where he can get used to living indoors quietly. A separate room in or on the property is desirable. It is negotiable whether Lodos can live with older children and whether a stable female might be possible. On the leash he can react to other dogs. Therefore, any introduction will have to be carefully considered and it is important that his future owner learns to deal with this. We are looking for people with experience with dogs of this type and size. Are you interested in this beautiful bear? Mail or fill out the questionnaire via our website.

About Lodos

What life with Lodos looks like

Lodos is a small senior akita dog waiting at Dierenasiel Genk in Genk.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇧🇪Adopting from Belgium

Belgian shelters operate under regional law (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels each have their own rules). All adoptions include the Eurochip, vaccinations, and a stewardship contract. Several Flemish shelters partner with Dutch and German rescue networks.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lodos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lodos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierenasiel Genk handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lodos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lodos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierenasiel Genk will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lodos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lodos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierenasiel Genk early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lodos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
