Lucky

Labrador Retriever · Male · Adult · 4 years

Sensitive, eager to learn, and brave when necessary. We would like to introduce you to our blonde hunk Lucky, a handsome guy almost 4 years old. As a young pup, Lucky ended up at a colleague animal shelter in Den Helder. Unfortunately, for a long time no suitable owner came forward for him, partly because Lucky carries a backpack. Because the staff saw potential in Lucky and gave him a fair chance, he was able to participate in the training program of Dutch Cell Dogs. Due to practical reasons and in the hope that there is a suitable place for him in the region of 's-Hertogenbosch, Lucky has now moved to our shelter. Since Lucky has been with us, he has been on behavioral medication and is neutered. This has led to a positive change in his behavior. Lucky is an active, sometimes slightly unsure dog who needs clarity and does best in a calm environment. During the time he has been with us, he has made a lot of progress. At first, he showed uncertain/fearful behavior in new situations and did not seek contact with his handler, but now he actually asks for support and confirmation. During walks, Lucky can be distracted with some treats when other dogs pass by, and pulling on the leash has decreased. We also see that he is enjoying cuddle sessions more and more. It is important that Lucky gets to know you well and that time is taken to build a bond with him. He is cautious around strangers and if you don't respect his boundaries and just approach him, he may bite. Lucky is very alert and has shown aggression in the past towards his food bowl and the veterinarian. We only place Lucky with people who have experience with more difficult dogs and want to train him in a positive way. Lucky is smart, food-oriented, and enjoys being with his owner. A lot of time and effort will have to be spent on Lucky. He will not be placed with children or other animals. Interested in Lucky? Contact us via and mention in your motivation at least: affectionate girl wants to be with you.

Interesse in Lucky?

About Lucky

What life with Lucky looks like

Lucky is a large adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Dierentehuis in Netherlands.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucky, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucky?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucky on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucky if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucky already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucky isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucky and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
