Adopt Manou

German Shepherd · Male · Puppy

Manou arrived at our shelter in early October 2025 as a found animal. Health: Manou was brought to us with some old sutures and stitches on the underside of the body. Our veterinarians suspect that Manou was severely bitten by another dog and underwent surgery, as over 30 stitches were removed. The young male dog shows no signs of lasting damage and has healed well. His back is sloped and his front legs are weak, which can cause problems as he ages. Since his arrival at the animal shelter, he has shown no signs of lameness. Personality: loyal, playful, active, friendly, sensitive, motivated, affectionate, vigilant Training status: Manou is a somewhat insecure but basically good-natured and people-oriented dog. The shelter routine is very stressful for him, and he hardly finds a moment of rest in his area. He moves almost continuously and reacts to small noises. Once outside the shelter grounds with him, he is relieved to leave behind all the stimuli and shows a more open demeanor. Manou can also be very finely tuned and cooperative, and he responds to small cues in a quiet environment. He enjoys working with people and seeks physical closeness in quiet moments. When the environment around him becomes more exciting, he has trouble focusing and forgets his sensitive side. We are currently working on the basics: leash handling, basic commands, managing frustration, and orientation at the end of the leash. Manou has great potential, and with calmness, patience, and clear guidance, he will surely become a reliable companion. In a home environment, Manou is like a new dog. He settles down well, accepts and cuddles with visitors after a short time, and is house-trained. For shepherds, he is the perfect dog! Compatibility with others: with male dogs: Conditioned Compatibility with others: with female dogs: Conditioned Alertness: yes Prey drive: interest in movement stimuli Ideal home: Immovable property type: ground floor and preferred with a garden, preferably rural and quiet Companion animals: no Children: no Second dog suitable: Conditioned Requirements for applicants: For Manou, we are looking for enthusiasts who appreciate his engaged nature and can guide him in the right direction. The male dog needs a confident handler who can manage him even in his overbearing moments and continue working on his impulse control and composure. To find the balance between setting boundaries and building self-confidence, applicants should have dog experience. Since he cannot handle being in the yard well, he may have trouble being left alone. After everything Manou has experienced, we wish him nothing more than a suitable forever home. If you are interested in Manou, please send us a completed application form by regular mail or email, which is available for download on our homepage (home page). After that, a staff member from our shelter will contact you to discuss the next steps. (As of: 15.03.2026 / AK)

(Stand: 15.03.2026 / AK)

About Manou

What life with Manou looks like

Manou is a large puppy/kitten german shepherd dog waiting at Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg in Duisburg.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Manou, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Manou?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Manou on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Manou if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Manou already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Manou isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Städtisches Tierheim Duisburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Manou and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
