Margate

Beagle · Male · Adult · 5 years

Margate has now spent over 2 years and 5 months in kennels. That’s almost 900 days of waiting. Waiting while thousands of people have walked past his kennel. Waiting while his friends have come and gone. Waiting for someone to truly see him. Everyone here adores Margate – he’s smart, affectionate, and bursting with personality. But love from staff isn’t the same as a forever home, and Margate is more than ready for his next chapter. Since staying with us, Margate has received a dental treatment and had a cyst removed from his back left leg. Margate came to us from a breeder in November 2023. He's incredibly intelligent, loves a challenge, and will do absolutely anything for a tasty treat. He picks up tricks like lightning – he knows “sit”, “paw” and “speak” and he’s always ready to learn more. He thrives when his brain is engaged and would be an excellent candidate for scent work or activities like cani-cross (on-lead only!). He’s been described as one of the smartest dogs we’ve ever worked with. He's vocal, a bit cheeky, and loves to tell us when it’s breakfast time – you can hear his excited barks all the way from the car park. He may come off as bouncy and bold, but beneath the surface, Margate is a sensitive soul who, sadly, has been let down by humans before. He can get worried easily, especially in overwhelming environments like the vet, where he becomes a bit of a puddle of anxiety (though he's muzzle-trained and manages with support). Margate does require a very specific kind of home, and we won’t sugar-coat it – he’s not a “starter dog.” He needs: Margate is possessive around food, toys, and bedding, likely stemming from insecurity in his past. These behaviours are manageable – we’ll give guidance – but his adopters will need to understand and work with him, never punish or push him beyond his limits. Setting him up for success is the key. Margate will test you – not because he's difficult, but because he's clever, spirited, and sensitive. But once you have his trust, you’ll have a bond that’s unbreakable. Because Margate isn’t a dog you can bring home on a whim. He’s for someone extraordinary. Someone who sees past the behaviours and looks into his big, soulful eyes and says, “I’ve got you now.” Margate has come so far during his time with us – he’s learned manners, made friends, gained confidence, and shown us the incredible potential he holds. But he deserves so much more than life in a kennel, no matter how much we love him. Margate is not for everyone, but if he’s for you – truly for you – then you are in for the most rewarding journey. He’ll love you with his whole heart, and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without him. If you think you could be his person, please don’t wait another day. Margate’s forever is long overdue. Let’s not make him wait another year. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.

About Margate

What life with Margate looks like

Margate is a large adult beagle dog waiting at Many Tears Animal Rescue in Llanelli.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior around food, toys, and bedding due to past insecurity. Requires muzzle training for vet visits due to anxiety.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Margate, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Margate?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Many Tears Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Margate on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Margate if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Many Tears Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Margate already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Margate isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Many Tears Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Margate and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
