Max

Dachshund · Male · Adult · 7 years

Max came to us as a last resort at the animal shelter. After his former owner passed away and no relative or friend could take care of him, we now need to find him a new home. Max arrived in a very poor general condition. He was severely undernourished and had very matted fur. The initially weak dog gained weight almost daily and became more lively. At first, Max struggled with the animal shelter situation and withdrew almost completely. He needed time to get to know the new people and trust them. When Max's "knot" came loose, his joy knew no bounds, and there was no trace of the weak, unkempt dog. With increasing weight and corresponding energy reserves, Max also quickly showed what a "character dog" he really is. How much he looks forward to the people when he approaches them, the little man quickly puts on his nice demeanor. As soon as something does not meet his conditions, Max forgets his good behavior and goes straight to the front. Whether you get too close to his dog bed or want to touch him at body parts he does not want to be touched, there is nothing of the otherwise cheerful male dog left. In these situations, his behavior is very consistent. If left largely alone, Max is the typical dachshund who joyfully runs around and is always occupied with his nose on the ground. For Max, we are looking for people who are particularly familiar with his behavior and willing to continue the training at home that has already begun. Due to his behavior, there should be no children or other animals in the household. As he does not cope well with the stress of an animal shelter, he should receive the peace and retreat option that he barely gets here. If you are interested in Max, please write us a substantive email or call us.

About Max

What life with Max looks like

Max is a adult dachshund dog waiting at Kolner Tierschutzverein in Köln.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kolner Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kolner Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kolner Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
