Max

Male · Adult · 5 years

MAX South Wales Adoption fee £250 Male (Miniature – 5kg) 5 years old Shaded red, smooth Neutered Max is a very loving and affectionate little boy who absolutely loves cuddles and being close to his people. He has bags of personality and once settled, has lots of love to give in return. Max has sadly experienced IVDD and has been through a particularly difficult period with his recovery. He was previously paralysed for around four months and suffered a further relapse around June 2026, which affected his back legs again. He has now almost fully recovered and can currently enjoy walks of up to 30 minutes a day with no issues at all. He absolutely loves his walks! Max is generally sociable with other dogs once he has had time to get to know them. However, he can be nervous when meeting dogs on lead and may bark, react or snap if he feels threatened. He can particularly struggle with puppies and very bouncy dogs, which he can find overwhelming. Once he knows a dog and feels comfortable, he enjoys their company and can be off lead with them. Max is great with children, particularly those who are calmer and understand the importance of giving him space. He is not suitable to live with cats. He is normally at home with his family and is not left for long periods. He can manage around 4–5 hours, although he can become a little stressed when his family leave and may occasionally have an accident. Max would benefit from a calm and settled home where someone is around for much of the day. His new family will need to understand his IVDD and be prepared to manage his exercise and lifestyle, with lots of support from The Red Foundation. An older, smaller and calm dog could be a good companion for him, following careful introductions. About Max

What life with Max looks like

Max is a adult dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Max, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Max?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Max on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Max if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Max already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Max isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Max and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
