Maxi

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 12 years

Max's past lies largely in the darkness – after his original owner simply left him in an apartment, he was passed around multiple times and ended up running around everywhere until he finally showed up at our shelter, about 6 hours after being brought in, in the middle of the night. The charming, older mixed-breed male dog is open, friendly, and communicative – very communicative. Maxi has a lot to say and does so with passion. It's likely that he hears less well due to his age. He is very cuddly, likes to chat with his people, and is a true heartbreaker. According to the last owners, there was an incident with Maxi where he "became a bit unfriendly." We experience him here as a dog who knows what he wants but is happy to work together with people. He has so far handled everything, even uncomfortable situations (vet visits, roughhousing, a bit of provocation, etc.), with great grace and poise. On the leash, he walks properly, even in groups. Sometimes he shows a bit of insecurity outside, especially in the dark, but mostly he is very sovereign. Physically, Maxi is not as robust as before. He has arthritis, and one can see his difficulties walking on uneven ground. So, a dog for leisurely walks that are not too long, but rather more frequent. Even though he is not as robust, Maxi has the strength to handle situations when needed. At 66 cm and just under 40 kg, he is not a small dog. Additionally, a heart murmur was detected in Maxi, which has already been cleared by a cardiologist. He is on heart medication. Maxi is generally not incompatible with other dogs – he usually likes female dogs and neutered male dogs, keeps an eye on unneutered males, and wants to show who's in charge sometimes. When Maxi helps the staff with office work, he shows his relaxed side – he sleeps quietly and comfortably, even when visitors come in. Only when it's time to go outside does he start talking again. For Maxi, we are looking for a loving home with beginner or experienced dog owners, ideally without children, with an open-plan living space, and a tolerant neighborhood for barking statements. Maxi wants to arrive and has more than earned it at 11 years old.

DE·Show original

About Maxi

What life with Maxi looks like

Maxi is a extra-large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maxi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maxi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maxi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maxi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maxi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maxi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maxi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
