Maya

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

Hi all, I'm Maya, and I am a very people friendly girl on the look out for a new home to call my own.As I said, I like to say hello to absolutely every human and give them lots of Maya cuddles and love so just warning you that there will be lots of licks involved. Because I enjoy the company of people so much, I am not going to suit a home where I am left for long periods. I like to stay close, so will generally be sat by your side or even at your feet waiting for belly rubs! I love being brushed and have been fab every time I have seen the vet. At bed time I wont be far away.....and if I'm allowed I would love to sleep with you, I'll keep my paws crossed!I am a very clever girl, and have responded really well to the positive reward training methods that are used here. I am now understanding that good behaviour means a tasty treat.....and I love my food!!! You might just have to be careful that I don't eat anything of yours, or something I shouldn't! I am quick to learn and really want to please, so training can be great fun for you and I! I love to play...balls and squeaky toys are my fovourites.I can be quite vocal, even chatty at times if I get frustrated or if you don't understand what I want. My barking can be a sign of me being protective of my home, or my owner if there are other dogs about.....I think I must have some German Shepherd in me! So a home where there isn't a lot of passers by would we great. I am currently being muzzle trained as when walking I am fine meeting some dogs, especially calm bigger ones, but reactive towards others, especially if they are making lots of noise. So I will need a new owner who can manage me on the lead in these times as that's when I get a bit pully. The rest of the time I generally walk beautifully.I think I would love to live with older children as long as they are big enough to cope with my size and excitement, as I will jump up for cuddles quite a lot. I am still getting used to transport and travelling but have enjoyed a ride on a bus a couple of times and in the vans here at the centre. My biggest wish is that there is a new owner out there just for me......I can't wait to be the best most loyal friend that you could wish for xx NAWT Cornwall Wheal Alfred Kennels Wheal Alfred Road Hayle Cornwall TR27 5JT Choose an item from our Amazon wish-list and it will come straight to us! About Maya

What life with Maya looks like

Maya is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. National Animal Welfare Trust handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — National Animal Welfare Trust will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with National Animal Welfare Trust early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
