Merlin

Male · Adult · 5 years

MERLIN MANCHESTER Adoption fee is £250 5 years old Male mini smooth red Neutered Merlin is a very clever, lovely and friendly boy who is looking for a special home following surgery for IVDD in March this year. Although he has made some progress, he is still currently unable to use his back legs and his owner has made the difficult decision to find Merlin a home better suited to his ongoing care and rehabilitation. Despite everything he has been through, Merlin’s wonderful nature shines through. He is a happy, affectionate little boy, full of character, who loves nothing more than being close to his people. Whether he’s playing with his favourite toys or curling up for a cuddle after a nap, Merlin is simply happiest when he’s surrounded by those he loves. His gentle, loving nature means he quickly becomes part of the family, and anyone lucky enough to welcome him into their home will gain a devoted and loving companion. Merlin is continuing his rehabilitation following his surgery, and his new family will need to be committed to providing the ongoing care and support he needs. He is continent with the occasional accident and sometimes needs his bladder expressing, although hopefully this should continue to improve. The Red Foundation is committed to supporting dogs with medical needs and we will discuss the support we can offer with potential adopters. Merlin could potentially live with another friendly dog and may also be able to live with dog-savvy cats (although he has never lived with a cat). He could also live with sensible, dog-savvy children aged 10 years and over who can understand and respect his needs. Due to his mobility needs, Merlin is looking for a home with easy access to a secure garden. Merlin sleeps in his crate and can be left for up to 3-4 hours. He is in excellent health apart from his IVDD and deserves a family who will continue to support him while embracing everything that makes him such a special little dog. With patience, commitment and plenty of affection, Merlin will make a truly wonderful companion and will undoubtedly become a much-loved member of the family. About Merlin

What life with Merlin looks like

Merlin is a adult dog waiting at The Red Foundation in Pentlow Street.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merlin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merlin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. The Red Foundation handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merlin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merlin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — The Red Foundation will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merlin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merlin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with The Red Foundation early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merlin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
