Merlin

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Young · 3 years

Merlin can live with children 13+. He could potentially live with another well-matched dog, but no cats or small animals. Merlin is a lovely, friendly boy who will need an active family to keep up with him! He’s a strong lad with a tendency to pull on the lead, especially at the start of a walk. He will benefit from a handler who can help to calm him when he gets a little excited! Merlin loves being around people and this can sometimes translate to him being a little clingy and needy. His owners will need to be around a lot of the time, especially in the early days, to help him settle. Merlin has recently begun to display some reactivity towards other dogs whilst in the shelter, but shows much calmer behaviour when off-site. We believe this is likely due to the frustration of the kennel environment, although any potential rehomers should be aware this behaviour may persist once in the home and may need worked on. He would benefit from experienced owners who are confident in managing his interactions around other dogs. Merlin is looking for a home that are capable of handling his goofy and sometimes boisterous behaviour and also happy to give him the calm, close contact that he needs for reassurance. He has a lot of love to give and deserves to find a forever family who will love him just as much in return! Merlin has required treatment for crystals in his urine. Whilst now resolved and currently managed with a certain diet, any potential rehomers should be aware that this will be classed as a pre-existing condition and won’t be covered by pet insurance. The rehoming team will discuss Merlin’s veterinary history in further detail with any successful applicants.

About Merlin

What life with Merlin looks like

Merlin is a small young adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter in Newcastle.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merlin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merlin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merlin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merlin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Merlin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merlin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merlin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
