Animal shelter ASAP (Alhama Street Animal Protection): Update May 3, 2026: Earlier we wrote that Moon had a hernia that could be removed with a minor procedure if he was 6 months old. The hernia turned out to be somewhat larger than expected, and so our veterinarian decided to operate on Moon on April 24 and surgically remove the hernia. Everything went well, and Moon is now happily hopping around again. Added: 2 new photos and a new video. Update April 11, 2026: Moon is an incredibly loving dog. He is best friends with his brother Apollo; they often lie together beautifully curled up. Moon still finds it a bit difficult to walk on a leash but keeps bravely practicing. Six new photos have been added. Input March 26, 2026: Moon is one of the 9 puppies Clara had on January 25, 2026. Clara was found by Sarah and Mike on December 23, 2025, somewhere near their campo house in Huétor-Tájar (a small village in the province of Granada). As she was wandering in the campo, it was unclear where she came from. Sarah and Mike took her in hungry and scared and gave her good food and a warm bed. In January, they took her to the vet and there their suspicions about her condition were confirmed. Clara was (highly) pregnant. There was no trace of the father, but he was probably also a podenco. On January 25, 9 pups were born: 7 males and 2 females. The females are going to Finland for adoption in May, and Clara will remain living with Sarah and Mike. They all received their first vaccination on March 9, their second vaccination on March 30. The third vaccination, along with their passport, chip, and rabies vaccination, is scheduled for April 25, and then they would be allowed to travel abroad from May 16. They are not yet walking on a leash because with so many puppies it's quite chaotic and difficult. But they are growing up in a household with several dogs and cats, where everyone gets along well. They have not yet had contact with children. Moon has a hernia (visible on the 7th photo), which could be removed with a minor procedure when he is 6 months old. Moon was weighed when he was 6 weeks old; his weight was then 2.5 kg. How big he will grow is still hard to say, but his mother is 52 cm.

Clara was (hoog)zwanger.

About Moon

What life with Moon looks like

Moon is a small puppy/kitten podenco dog waiting at description in AL Ridderkerk.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Moon, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Moon?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. description handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Moon on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Moon if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — description will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Moon already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Moon isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with description early rather than rehoming privately; they know Moon and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
