Adopt Nanuk

Mixed Breed · Male · 5 years

Nanuk is about 5 years old dog of northern breeds. The animal shelter received Nanuk as a found animal - was running on the streets. Initially, Nanuk was very mistrustful and showed aggression towards people, especially in response to touch and hand movements. After working with a behaviorist, Nanuk now approaches to be petted, but when he has had enough closeness, he signals with a light growl or simply walks away. The key to working on Nanuka's behavior is building the right bond and gaining his trust. The future caregiver of Nanuka should be able to read dog body language well, recognize his emotions, intentions and respond appropriately. Nanuk is a confident dog, intelligent and very willing to learn, and for a nice treat, can perform simple commands or even more complicated ones. He also has a good appetite, so it is necessary to be careful not to overfeed him. He likes long walks, during which he can satisfy his need to run and sniff. He really likes playing tug-of-war and fetching, and on the command 'drop' he lets go. As a northern breed, he is strong and independent, so he is recommended for an active, experienced home that understands the needs of the breed. Definitely not a couch potato! There is also no question of letting the dog walk off-leash during walks. With other dogs, Nanuk shows various reactions. He clearly communicates, can greet and play with another dog, but when he sees some, he becomes overly excited. He may not get along with dogs showing aggressive behavior and more confident than himself. For Nanuka we are looking for a home without children and without other animals, active, willing to cooperate with a behaviorist, aware of the problems a shelter dog may cause and above all determined to work with the dog. Nanuk has shown that if enough time is devoted to him, his signals are respected and his natural needs are met, he can be a wonderful companion seeking human contact. Pre-adoption, meet-and-greet walks and contact with the behaviorist are required. Organization for Animal Protection in Poland, animal shelter for homeless animals in Wrocław ul. Nanuk to około 5 letni pies w typie ras północnych. About Nanuk

What life with Nanuk looks like

Nanuk is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Wrocław in Wrocław.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Requires behavioral work, no off-leash walking, needs active experienced owner

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nanuk, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nanuk?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Wrocław handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nanuk on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nanuk if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Wrocław will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nanuk already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nanuk isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Wrocław early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nanuk and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
