Adopt Neeltsje

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

For an explanation, please read Why we are cautious about placing our dogs with families with (young) children. Neeltsje, or as her foster family affectionately calls her "Neel," is a cheerful, smart and sensitive dog who will really come into her own in the right environment. She is open and friendly and makes contact easily. She loves sunbathing and when she is happy, her whole body joins in, including her wiggly bottom! She is people-oriented and finds other dogs very exciting. Her social skills around dogs are not optimal. With smaller dogs she can be too much, while with larger dogs you can see tension and uncertainty, which can turn into barking or outbursts. This is not a lack of will, but something she still needs guidance with. We therefore prefer a home with people who do not have another dog and who also keep her away from other dogs as much as possible in the beginning. At home she is calm. She likes to lie in her crate or on the couch, can amuse herself well and is not constantly with you. At the same time, she can also be playful and sometimes needs to let off some energy. Noises in the house such as the vacuum cleaner, television or kitchen appliances do little to her. She looks at them for a moment and then continues. She is people-oriented and open in contact, seeks you out, but can also just do her own thing. Neeltsje sleeps during the day and at night in the crate and really relaxes there. When she is alone, it is also in the crate so she does not get overstimulated. This can also be continued in a new home. With children who respect the boundaries of dogs, she can live very well. Visitors are received with an open and relaxed attitude. With her whole body she wags her tail and she really enjoys making contact with visitors. Neeltsje walks calmly on the lead as long as the environment is calm. Trucks, farm traffic, cyclists, everyone can pass without any reaction from Neeltsje. However, she does have an opinion about the barking dog 400 meters away. When she sees a "new" object for her, she can first bark at it. The tension she builds up at such a moment is shaken off after 20 minutes. Therefore, walking in a neighborhood or other unfamiliar environment must be gradually built up so that she gets enough recovery time. With time and patience, she will become a lovely walking companion! Medical notes: As far as known, Neeltsje is completely healthy. In Romania, she was tested for Parvo, Giardia, Corona and Brucella; the results were good. Her vaccinations are in order, as well as her registered chip and passport.

About Neeltsje

What life with Neeltsje looks like

Neeltsje is a small young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Neeltsje, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Neeltsje?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Neeltsje on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Neeltsje if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Neeltsje already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Neeltsje isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Neeltsje and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
