Adopt Onyx

Mixed Breed · Unknown · 2 years

Onyx and his sibling Maple were found in Farkaserdő. In our opinion, this wolf-like appearance makes him very special, we would certainly not say he is frightening, he is more like a big lovable pup. Onyx is more courageous than Maple, he is not scared by city noises. He loves people, cuddles, plays, runs around, and happily offers his belly for a little petting. When he came to us, he walked nicely on a leash, but the lack of exercise also affects him, so he has become a bit more energetic, pullier and barker. However, this can be nicely managed with regular exercise and consistent training, even with the help of a dog school. He barks at other dogs, but can be stopped with a firm command, there will be no problem with a decisive owner. His relationship with other dogs is not yet fully known, but starting from his sibling, he is likely to be socialized. He does not like cats. He would love to move to a house with a garden, even together with his sibling.

Onyxot testvérével, Maple-lel együtt találták a Farkaserdőben. Szívesen költözne kertes házba, akár testvérével együtt is. Fontos! -------------------------------------ENGLISH VERSION BELOW-------------------------------------------

About Onyx

What life with Onyx looks like

Onyx is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rex Kutyaotthon in Budapest.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs consistent training and regular exercise to manage leash pulling and barking behaviors

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onyx, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onyx?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rex Kutyaotthon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onyx on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onyx if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rex Kutyaotthon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Onyx already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onyx isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rex Kutyaotthon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onyx and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
