Oso

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 2 years

A young and energetic German Shepherd mix, Oso, is looking for a home with dog experience. The shelter is currently accepting inquiries via email only, as per normal procedures. Please provide detailed information about your dog experience and the kind of home you can offer Oso. Oso is a friendly dog that can jump up on people when excited, so it's important to be prepared for this behavior. This habit is being worked on in the foster home to make greetings more relaxed. Oso is a people-oriented dog that quickly bonds with its owner and enjoys being close to them, participating in all activities. He still needs a lot of basic training and practice with being alone. When left alone, he jumps up against the door, barking, but he hasn't caused any damage. In the foster home, he has been practicing being alone and has shown some improvement, sometimes staying calm and waking up when his owner returns. Training is continued almost daily to ensure that being alone is always calm. Oso previously lived with an older female dog that dominated him, and they had some conflicts. In a future home, a social, playful female dog could be a good companion. However, Oso should not be placed with another male dog to avoid potential problems. There is no information on how he reacts to cats. Oso is an energetic and playful dog who enjoys forest walks, exploring scents, and taking running sprints. He stays close to his owner and comes back when called. He has many toys that he enjoys playing with, switching to a new one when he gets bored. When Oso first came to the association, he was in poor condition, clearly lacking muscle mass, and his movements caused concern. His spine, hips, and shoulder joints were X-rayed, and both hips showed looseness, with sclerosis observed in the cranial parts of the hip sockets. Sclerosis is a common change associated with wear and tear. No signs of osteoarthritis were found at this time, but the looseness in the hips increases the risk of osteoarthritis in the future. If the muscles are strengthened, the risk of osteoarthritis can be reduced. There were no other concerns in the X-rays. Oso is accustomed to children, but due to his size, he should not be placed in a home with very young children, as he may not always be gentle with them. He gets along well with older children, especially if they are familiar with dogs. He travels well in the car, eagerly getting in and not getting car sick. Oso is looking for a home with someone who has experience with dogs, preferably in a detached house, as he is not suitable for an apartment. The new home must commit to providing Oso with sufficient exercise, training, and stimulation. He is not a first-time dog and is not suitable as a mere decorative item. If left bored, he may release his energy by causing mischief. Oso is house-trained and can be visited at the foster home in Tampere, where you can meet him.

Nuori ja vauhdikas Oso etsii koirakokemusta omaavaa kotia Ososta otetaan tällä hetkellä kyselyjä vastaan AINOASTAAN sähköpostitse normaali ohjeista poiketen. Kerrothan kattavasti koirakokemuksestasi ja millainen koti sinulla olisi Osolle tarjota. Nuori saksanpaimenkoira mix Oso etsii uutta kotia. Koirien tulee kuitenkin tavata ainakin kerran ennen kotiutuspäätöstä. Skleroosi on tavallinen kulumiseen liittyvä muutos.

About Oso

What life with Oso looks like

Oso is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Rekku Rescue ry in Helsinki.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oso, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oso?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Rekku Rescue ry handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oso on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oso if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Rekku Rescue ry will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oso already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oso isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Rekku Rescue ry early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oso and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
