Paolina und Paolino

European Shorthair · Unknown · Young · 1 year

Paolina und Paolino were found on a colony in Sardinia – two young, black beauties who immediately captivated despite their difficult start in life. Both are approximately one year old and currently live in the animal shelter in Olbia. It became clear quickly: The two are something very special. They have ataxia, a neurological disorder that makes their movements wobbly and uncoordinated. But anyone who meets them immediately notices: Their joy of life is unbroken. It’s also worth mentioning that the two have a severe form of ataxia and are very wobbly. This is an inherited form due to damage to the cerebellum. The good thing about it is that the ataxia should not progress further. Paolina is the delicate, short-haired kitten who soaks up every bit of attention like a sponge. As soon as she’s picked up, she’s immediately calm and relaxed, enjoying the closeness to humans very much. But back in the cage, she also shows that she’s very playful and would like more space to run around. While Paolina greets all visitors joyfully, Paolino is the more reserved of the two. The gentle, semi-long-haired tomcat needed a moment before my colleague could touch and stroke him. We experienced the cute tomcat with the plush tail as calm, friendly, and incredibly lovable. Both are curious and people-oriented despite their limitations and are not held back by their handicap. What does ataxia mean – and what does an appropriate home need? Ataxia cats are not “sick” cats – they are simply different. They can lead a happy, long life if a few things are considered. For Paolina und Paolino, we wish for a home that caters to their needs. This means a safe environment, no high, unsafe climbing surfaces, furniture should be stable and non-slippery floors. For example, carpets can help with walking.

DE·Show original

Was bedeutet Ataxie – und was braucht ein geeignetes Zuhause?

About Paolina und Paolino

What life with Paolina und Paolino looks like

Paolina und Paolino is a young adult european shorthair cat waiting at PfotenFreunde Sardinien e.V. in Germany.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Paolina und Paolino, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Paolina und Paolino?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. PfotenFreunde Sardinien e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Paolina und Paolino on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Paolina und Paolino if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — PfotenFreunde Sardinien e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Paolina und Paolino already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Paolina und Paolino isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with PfotenFreunde Sardinien e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Paolina und Paolino and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
