Pepa

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

The story of Pepa is unfortunately one that many of our shelter animals share: one day left somewhere or, as is often the case with Podencos or Galgos, escaped from their owner and abuser, wandering around for a while and, if lucky, collected by an animal welfare worker or rescuer and brought to the animal shelter. Often difficult is that we have no history of the dogs "entrusted" to us - we, and especially our Spanish partners, can only try to read from the behavior of these four-legged animals whether and to what extent they have been abused. With Pepa, it seems not to be the case. The very beautiful female dog approaches the two-legged beings she knows openly, enjoys being petted and overall appears very relieved not having to spend the night on the street anymore and always finding enough food and cuddles. With her wide grin, she has conquered all hearts (two- and four-legged) in a very short time and is always up for a game with her colleagues. At about two and a half years old (as of February 2022), Pepa is not too old to soon discover how it feels to live as a real family dog. The Podenco adventure is too quickly rejected because a wrong image of these amusing companions is rooted in people's minds. It is true that the Podenco is a running-loving hunting dog and it can take a long time until a member of this breed can be safely let off the leash, but this is not a problem that only affects the Podencos (especially since it also depends on the character of each individual dog, as with any breed) and there are plenty of other ways to give the Podenco enough exercise. Dog sports, playing in the garden, also running alongside a bicycle, jogging and much more are excellent alternatives. On the positive side of the smart Spaniards, there are many points that are far more interesting. The Podenco is usually a very calm and balanced companion in the house. He does not tend to bark or overprotect, moves almost silently and loves cuddles above all. As a confident working dog, most learn very quickly how to stay alone without beautifying the furnishings of the apartment or adding extra air holes to the family shoes out of boredom. So do not be impressed by one-sided information, rather speak to people who have already given their heart to a Podenco - you will experience that you hear wonderful stories about amazing family dogs from these. And if you believe the enthusiastic owners and perhaps also met one of the many already happy Podencos living in Germany, then do not hesitate any longer and give Pepa (or one of our many other bat-eared ones) a chance for a nice life by your side.

DE·Show original

About Pepa

What life with Pepa looks like

Pepa is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pepa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pepa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pepa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pepa if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pepa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pepa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pepa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
