Adopt Raija

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Primary vaccination + Rabies Our beautiful Raija - A strong-willed, wonderful female dog is seeking clear guidance from loving people. Foster home in 42799 Leichlingen • Name: Raija • Age: about 1.5 years • Size: about 61 cm • Weight: about 29 kg • Gender: female • Breed: Herding dog mix • Health & Documents: Fully vaccinated, has a valid EU pet passport and has already successfully passed her second heat. • Background: Arrived in Germany at 5.5 months old. About Raija Raija is a smart, stubborn and active young female dog with typical herding dog genes. She is incredibly affectionate and absolutely friendly towards people, but can sometimes be a bit impulsive and "overwhelming". The dog needs very clear, consistent guidance in her new home that shows her definite boundaries and leaves no room for discussion. Those who meet her with confidence and calmness will find in Raija a loyal and reliable partner. In daily life and on the go: Raija travels easily in the car and proves to be an uncomplicated companion. The basic obedience is familiar to her: with good timing and consistent guidance, she is reliably available in daily life. Although she has a certain prey drive, this can be well managed with early intervention. Raija initially appears uncertain towards unfamiliar environmental stimuli, such as trucks, buses or tractors, and needs people by her side who give her security and orientation. Raija is also very alert and barks occasionally, but can be easily prevented from doing so with a clear address. Especially in the dark, she is more protective and reacts skeptically to strangers with growling. At home and social behavior: Raija loves being near her human pack and sleeping with them. However, she can also rest well alone (for example, in the living room while someone is in the house) and only needs the certainty that someone is at home. Active alone time works for up to 1.5 hours without her destroying anything. Since she still does not like being alone, this training should continue to be carried out patiently. Raija is generally compatible with other dogs. However, she tends to be very playful and likes to harass others. Therefore, her new owner should be able to read her body language well to recognize it early and manage it accordingly. She also knows horses, but finds these large animals rather scary. Our ideal home We are looking for people with dog experience who enjoy fair and consistent work with a strong-willed dog. A rural and quieter environment without much traffic would give Raija the necessary security to mature into a balanced female dog. Apply for Raija Become a godparent for Raija

About Raija

What life with Raija looks like

Raija is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ankerhunde e.V. in Novi Grad.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇧🇦Adopting from Bosnia and Herzegovina

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Raija, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Raija?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ankerhunde e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Raija on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Raija if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ankerhunde e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Raija already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Raija isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ankerhunde e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Raija and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
