Ramses

Mixed Breed · Male · 3 years

Ramses is a curious, affectionate and social cat. Ramses needs a safe and calm home with someone who is experienced with cats, preferably without children or other animals. He takes time to feel secure, but gradually warms up. Ramses needs access to good and safe outdoor opportunities. I'm quite affectionate, curious and social, but I need to feel properly safe with you before I show my best side. When I want affection, I don't go straight for it, but rather approach a bit cautiously. But when the affection starts, I keep coming over to you and rub my head against your hand for more. Head petting and scratching behind the ears is best, but I also really like it when you stroke me continuously from head to tail. You can also scratch me a little under the chin, but not too often. I don't like belly rubs, and if I feel your hand near my belly, I might try to bite you. Recently, I have realized that it is possible to get on your lap for affection, but I would rather be next to you when it's time for affection. When I am properly affectionate, I also tend to purr. I can be lifted easily, but I don't like being carried for long periods. Your bed is comfortable, but I prefer to sleep in it when you are not there with me. Outside of the bed, the sofa is the best sleeping place, but if you give me a soft mat under your bed or a similar place when I move in with you, I will appreciate it very much. I'm not very playful, some toys are even kind of weird, especially fishing rods. But my tail can suddenly become very exciting, and then I rather start playing with it instead. When we play, I may bite a little, but it varies from hard biting to gentle biting. I never scratch. What I actually like to spend my time on, is looking out the window. I hope I can soon get out. Although I am curious and social, it takes a while before I warm up to new things, and I startle easily, even by the smallest things. The vacuum cleaner, of course, makes me quite scared, so if you close the door to the room I am in, I at least get some peace. I can startle at the smallest things, even if you just walk a bit fast or get up from the sofa. When you have visitors, I hide and get scared, since I haven't become safe with them yet. When I am properly scared, I start urinating right on the floor, and I can also defecate on the floor, but usually I am very good at using the litter box. It is very important that things happen on my terms and that I am not rushed in the safety and adjustment phase. It is an advantage if I don't have to deal with too many people at once, but I also don't like being alone at home for too long during the day. If it gets too quiet, I start meowing, so the foster home usually turns on the radio for me on a rather calm channel. Actually, the best thing is if there is always some sound around me, for example TV, music, or you talking to me, because then I don't startle as much.

About Ramses

What life with Ramses looks like

Ramses is a large adult mixed breed cat waiting at Dyrebeskyttelsen Oslo in Oslo.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

Note from the shelter: Needs time to build trust, outdoor access required, specific handling preferences

🇳🇴Adopting from Norway

Norwegian rescues require thorough background checks. Animals leave with a Nordic pet passport and full vetting. Norway is outside the EU so import rules differ slightly — TRACES applies.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ramses, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ramses?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dyrebeskyttelsen Oslo handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ramses on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ramses if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dyrebeskyttelsen Oslo will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ramses already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ramses isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dyrebeskyttelsen Oslo early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ramses and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NO). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
