Adopt Red

American Staffordshire Terrier · Male · Adult · 7 years

Which dog owners; we are looking for Red: Only rehomed to experienced people who are familiar with challenging dogs and their special needs. No children or cats are allowed in the new home. One needs a lot of patience, time, and understanding for the insecure male dog. The new owners should be interested in dog training classes and training. Willingness to work with a muzzle is required. Lots of time and understanding are needed to work with his fears. Several kennel learning sessions with much time are needed so that Red can get used to new people at his own pace. History of the dog (why in the animal shelter) Red had a bad start in life. He was originally brought from Poland to Switzerland, where he spent the first period of time only in the basement. He was rescued from these terrible living conditions and brought to the animal shelter. Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier Born on: 13.08.2019 Country of Origin: Switzerland In the animal shelter since: August 2022 Character and Behavior Red is a very insecure young dog who still has much to learn and discover. He reacts very suspiciously to new things, barks loudly at strangers, and gets on the leash. He still needs a lot of help and support. He is very sensitive and immediately notices if someone is insecure around him. Outside, he still needs to learn to be more relaxed, as he can already handle many distractions, but can be more easily irritated or unsettled depending on his mood. Dog encounters outside work well when Red has enough distance from them. He purposefully seeks out his people. Those he fully accepts, he trusts and shows his affection to. He loves to play, but for his breed, he can get very excitable and find it hard to calm down. Red is a very smart little guy and always tries his best to learn. Unfortunately, he has food allergies and takes medication for them. There should be no children or cats in the same household, but the sympathy of fellow animals is crucial. Has Red caught your interest? You are welcome to contact us to arrange a meet and greet.

About Red

What life with Red looks like

Red is a medium-sized adult american staffordshire terrier dog waiting at Stiftung Paradiesli, Tierheim für Ob und Nidwalden.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Red, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Red?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stiftung Paradiesli, Tierheim für Ob und Nidwalden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Red on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Red if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Stiftung Paradiesli, Tierheim für Ob und Nidwalden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Red already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Red isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stiftung Paradiesli, Tierheim für Ob und Nidwalden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Red and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
