Riga

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

We met Riga during our visit to Elisa's animal shelter in May 2023. In October 2024, we met her again and what a difference! Last year she was so unsure that she didn't want to go for a walk. In October she went for a walk with us and we had a long cuddle session with her. Riga is a gentle and people-oriented dog; she was very happy with our attention. During the walk, she wore a harness for the first time in her life and walked on a leash. After an awkward start, she walked well and checked in with her companion each time. She is very alpha dog! She also reacted socially to the other dogs. In March 2025 and in January and March 2026 we met her again. In March we also went for a walk with her at the animal shelter; she is really a treasure of a dog. The videos at the bottom of this page give a good impression of this nice, affectionate dog. We would prefer to place her in a home where there is already a social dog present, whom she can rely on, in her new world in the Netherlands. Riga is a cuddle butt. A lap dog, if your lap is big enough :-) But even with a sofa or a bed, Riga would be extremely happy; what a wonderful luxury compared to her life at the animal shelter... Riga rarely leaves the kennel and this is the second or third time in her entire life that she has been taken out for a walk... What a great dog: Unfortunately, she did not bring her fur color. Strange but true: Black dogs are less likely to be adopted; many people don't want a black / dark-colored dog... The hard reality means that she is therefore less adoptable. It's so sad and a shame that such a nice dog is locked up in a Romanian shelter, while she would make a suitable adopter in the Netherlands very happy!

About Riga

What life with Riga looks like

Riga is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Riga, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Riga?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Riga on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Riga if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Riga already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Riga isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Riga and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
