Rita

Mixed Breed · Unknown

The approximately two-year-old, already spayed Sighthound mix female dog Rita is looking for a suitable home with people who enjoy a sensitive, active dog and appreciate the special characteristics of a sighthound mix. Rita appears in the animal shelter as a friendly, affectionate, and people-oriented female dog who enjoys contact with her trusted people and likes to be close to them. She greets known people openly and actively seeks affection, but remains pleasant and not intrusive. Rita gets along well with other dogs, based on previous observations. She communicates in a friendly and social manner and could probably imagine a home with an existing dog, depending on compatibility. Of course, any introductions should always take place individually and calmly. As a breed typical of sighthound mixes, Rita has a lot of enthusiasm for movement. She likes to run, is active, and enjoys long walks as well as opportunities to exercise physically. Therefore, potential adopters should have enough time and enjoyment in regular mental stimulation outdoors. At the same time, many sighthound mixes also have calm and cozy sides in a home environment, provided their needs for movement and mental stimulation are met. Like many dogs with sighthound heritage, Rita likely has a prey drive. New owners should be aware of this and take appropriate precautions. A securely fenced off-leash area as well as responsible handling during walks are therefore important. Whether and to what extent Rita reacts with a hunting motivation can vary depending on the situation and environment, and should be accompanied with patience and training. Rita is looking for people who give her enough time to adjust and who would like to accompany her through life lovingly, consistently, and understandingly.

About Rita

What life with Rita looks like

Rita is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. in Dormagen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rita, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rita?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rita on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rita if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rita already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rita isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Dormagen e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rita and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
