Adopt Rocco

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Hello! My name is Rocco. My way to the animal shelter came about because my previous owner could no longer take such good care of me. With familiar people, I am friendly, open, and cuddly. Towards unfamiliar people, I am very insecure at the beginning and need to check if anything bad will happen to me. Here, it helps me a lot when a primary caregiver is present; then I am much more relaxed. I walk calmly on the leash, and I show a lot of curiosity and friendliness towards other dogs I meet on walks. However, I have not yet had direct dog-to-dog contact here at the animal shelter. My foster caregiver believes, however, that I am compatible. I show very well through body language what I like and what I don't like – for example, I enjoy very generous cuddles with my human friends, but it can sometimes become too much for me, and I signal that well too. Otherwise, I am a real water rat and love to splash around. The animal shelter is currently practicing driving and carrying a muzzle with me. I sometimes limp with my left hind leg and unfortunately have severe HD. At the moment, I take pain medication and joint supplements and manage well with them. Otherwise, I appear to be in good health. I am looking for a home with patient people who already have dog experience and give me time to build trust. I still have a lot to catch up on and have surely not yet met everything, but with your support, I will definitely master that too. I would rather live in a quiet neighborhood, as the city is too busy for me. A garden is absolutely necessary for me. Children should already be in their teenage years and have experience with dogs. Whether I can be rehomed with cats or as a second dog, we can certainly look at that individually. If you would like to meet me, please contact the animal shelter!

Hallo! Dein Rocco

About Rocco

What life with Rocco looks like

Rocco is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein St. Pölten in St. Pölten.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Occasional limping in left hind leg, X-ray scheduled for September. Needs muzzle and car travel training.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rocco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rocco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein St. Pölten handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rocco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rocco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein St. Pölten will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rocco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rocco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein St. Pölten early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rocco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
