Native Country: Hungary Roni, the beautiful dog, arrived as a surrender dog at Menhely on September 9, 2021. The then 8-year-old male shepherd mix dog was not allowed to stay with his people anymore for reasons unknown to us. Unfortunately, no one knew what Roni’s previous life had been like, whether he had regular contact with two- and four-legged beings, or if he was more on his own. Regardless, it became clear very quickly that Roni preferred to take the reins and was not used to people taking on that role for him. The confident and intelligent dogman showed no fear to the caretakers but also did not want them to be in his immediate vicinity at first. Clearly, this was new territory for Roni, and he needed some time to recognize and feel that the two-legged beings did not only come to feed and clean him. Over time, the handsome dogman recognized that human proximity and affection could be pleasant and found more and more joy in cuddles and encouraging words. Like most of his fellow animals, Roni wanted to spice up his everyday life with excitement and adventures, and his curiosity and zest for life helped him overcome other hurdles. In 2023, the intelligent and active male dog was instructed by a dog trainer. Much work was done on leash handling, and at the same time, "social behavior towards fellow animals and people" was a very central topic. Roni clearly showed who counted as part of his closest circle of friends and made it clear that male dogs were not really desired and female dogs only if they were not too dominant. Typical of a shepherd, Roni loves ball games. To fulfill his hobby and to make his desire for mental stimulation and species-appropriate exercise happen as often as possible, the handsome dog boy shows more and more of his best side and joyfully participates in the mentor program. Roni enjoys long and exciting walks, absorbs everything, and shows the caretakers that he is still spirited and active at over 12 years old. His play drive is still very high, and his thick skull sometimes hinders him from bringing back the thrown toy and "giving it back." If one can trick him, he is cooperative and shows great joy that the game continues. Once he is thoroughly exhausted, he also likes stroking hands, caresses, and human proximity. Roni now shows his people that he is happy about their acquaintance and considers them welcome. Roni is gaining more and more trust, and his circle of friends has already grown. However, for Roni to finally move into his own home and be at the center of loving people, some points on the to-do list must be considered. Roni has already packed his suitcase and is waiting only for his departure ticket. On May 17, 2026, a voluntary, Hungarian helper writes: "According to his profile, Roni was surrendered to the animal shelter due to changes in his owner's living situation. He arrived at the shelter’s care in September 2021 and participated in a socialization training. We had already gotten to know Roni earlier on the shelter’s playground and allowed him to go on a walk with a mentor. Roni started the walk happily and energetically. On the leash, he ran beautifully and explored his surroundings attentively. During the walk, he sniffed extensively, enjoyed the many new impressions, and was happy to leave his kennel and move freely. He is still active, motivated, and enjoys movement and walks. With his mentor, he quickly built a good relationship. Roni is a people-oriented and friendly dog who is attentive and well-oriented when you stop. He enjoys cuddles and affection during the walk very much. On the playground, he also showed himself to be friendly, open, and playful. He enjoyed attention and mental stimulation. When he was thrown a ball, he ran after it enthusiastically and brought it back. Roni wishes to find a new home with responsible, patient people who love and respect him. People who take him for walks, play with him, and attend to his needs. He wants to finally experience what it is like to live in a safe and warm home of his own." Who will give Roni his home?

Ursprungsland: Ungarn Roni hat bereits viele «Titel»: Notfall, Die Vergessenen, Hund des Monats Juli 2024 durchlaufen, das sind aber keine Titel, respektive Rubriken, auf welche man stolz sein kann, nein es macht wahnsinnig traurig, dass Roni schon so lange hinter Gitter sitzen muss. Verlorene, wertvolle Lebenszeit. Roni ist ein freundlicher, neugieriger Hundesenior, der Menschen mag. Er lässt sich gerne streicheln, läuft entspannt an der Leine, spielt ab und zu noch mit dem Ball und freut sich über jede Minute, die jemand mit ihm verbringt. Auch mit anderen Hunden versteht er sich inzwischen gut. Und doch lebt er seit dem 9. September 2021 im Tierheim in Ungarn. Fünf Jahre hat er dort schon hinter Gittern verbracht. Nun ist er 13 Jahre alt, und seine Zeit läuft. Roni braucht jetzt ein Zuhause, nicht irgendwann. Roni kam als Abgabehund ins Tierheim, weil seine Menschen ihn aufgrund veränderter Lebensumstände nicht mehr behalten konnten. Vermutlich führte er zuvor das typische Leben eines Hofhundes: mit etwas Glück frei, sonst an der Kette, meist sich selbst überlassen und bei jedem Wetter draussen. Ein Familienleben kannte er nicht, und so wusste er mit uns Zweibeinern anfangs wenig anzufangen. Umso schöner ist, was seither geschehen ist: Dank der Tierheimmitarbeitenden und dem Mentorprogramm, an dem Roni eine Zeit lang teilnehmen durfte, hat er entdeckt, wie schön Streicheleinheiten und menschliche Nähe sind. Heute ist er ein angenehmer Begleiter, der gerne etwas mit seinen Menschen unternimmt und auch bereit ist, noch Neues zu lernen. Nur beim Tierarzt braucht er noch Geduld: Festhalten und Behandlungen sind ihm fremd, weil sich so etwas im Tierheimalltag kaum üben lässt und das stresst ihn sehr. Mit Ruhe, Vertrauen und etwas Training wird er auch das lernen. Roni kann gut als Einzelhund leben. Uns liegt Roni sehr am Herzen. Jedes Mal, wenn sich seine Zwingertür öffnet, hofft er, dass es das letzte Mal ist. Er soll endlich erleben dürfen, wie es ist, in einem eigenen Bettchen zu schlafen, einen eigenen Napf zu haben, täglich schöne Spaziergänge zu machen und nicht mehr Hitze und Kälte ausgesetzt zu sein. Wir suchen Menschen mit einem grossen Herzen für ältere Hunde, die ihn nehmen, wie er ist, ihm Sicherheit und klare Führung geben und mit ihm durch dick und dünn gehen. Für Roni brauchen wir keine 100 Anfragen. Eine einzige genügt, wenn es die richtige ist. Update vom 11.07.2026: Was für ein angenehmer Begleiter er inzwischen geworden ist! Wer mit Roni spazieren geht, erlebt einen richtig entspannten Lauf: Bleibt man stehen, bleibt auch er stehen. Läuft man weiter, ist er ganz selbstverständlich nebenbei mit dabei. Roni bewohnt nach wie vor einen Einzelzwinger und ist dort so einsam wie eh und je, obwohl er sich mittlerweile mit seinen Artgenossen verträgt. Er lässt sich sehr gerne streicheln, und man darf ihn überall anfassen. Nur eine Einengung mag er (noch) nicht: Legt man ihm den Arm um den Brustkorb, weicht er ruhig ein wenig zur Seite aus. Ganz einfach deshalb, weil er das nicht kennt. Dabei zeigt er keinerlei Aggression, kein Schnappen. Er macht sich einfach etwas Platz. Mit der Zeit und dem nötigen Vertrauen wird auch das kommen. Medizinisches Update 24.09.2026: Roni hat eine bakterielle Ohrenentzündung, die behandelt wird und bereits am Abklingen ist. Er hält den Kopf etwas schief. Das kann mit der Ohrenentzündung zusammenhängen, möglicherweise aber auch mit dem Mittelohr. Um das abzuklären, bräuchte es ein CT oder MRI. Dies möchten wir Roni in seinem Alter jedoch nicht mehr zumuten, da dafür eine längere Narkose nötig wäre. Aufgrund erhöhter Leberwerte wurde am 21.09.2026 ein Ultraschall des Bauchraums gemacht, der unauffällig war. Auch die Urinkontrolle lag im Normbereich. Roni bekommt nun während vier Wochen eine Kur mit Hepa-Pet Plus Tabletten (ein Ergänzungsfuttermittel zur Unterstützung und zum Schutz der Leber) sowie Liver Care Futter. Danach folgt eine erneute Blutkontrolle. Es ist allerhöchste Zeit, dass Roni das Tierheim endlich verlassen darf. Er hat so lange gewartet. Schenken wir ihm sein eigenes Zuhause. Roni ist reisefertig.
