Ronja

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Ronja, a Herdenschutzhund mix, came to Germany at 2 years old and has lived in a shared living arrangement for a year. We are looking for a new home for her because the current living situation is not suitable for her. As a Herdenschutzhund mix, we are looking for experienced dog owners who can lead her confidently. Unfortunately, Ronja has a problem with men in a domestic environment, so we are looking for a household with only women. The new home should be in a quiet location, preferably in a rural area. She loves to sit in the garden and observe the surroundings. Ronja is a very playful and curious little girl and loves to run. She enjoys working and wants to please her humans. She is already very good on a leash and bicycle and the foundation for basic training has been laid. She is also familiar with car and train travel. Racially, she tends to watch over her territory and her people. She is initially skeptical of strangers and needs time to build real trust. Especially in her home, she doesn't like strangers, but she quickly warms up and makes contact with strangers and lets them pet her when she is outside. She shows fear of men and building trust is more difficult. It is important that people respond to her signals and adapt to her pace in allowing closeness. In her last home, she lived harmoniously with an older male and has built trust with several people. She can also stay alone for several hours. Ronja can relax well at home, but as a young dog, she also enjoys activity. She loves water, walking in the forest, running on the meadow and tracking. She shows uncertain behavior more when it is dark, with loud noises and large dogs. She usually turns to the person of reference for support when she is uncertain. Ronja suffers from a -probably congenital - hip dysplasia. She is currently receiving pain therapy and physiotherapy. However, surgery on the hip is not excluded. Ronja has great potential and wants to learn more about the world. She just needs the right home where she gets the clear structures she needs to flourish at her own pace. Make a get-to-know-you appointment with us and let your heart be stolen. Note: only placed in a household with only women and no other animals!

About Ronja

What life with Ronja looks like

Ronja is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Köln-Ostheim in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ronja, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ronja?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Köln-Ostheim handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ronja on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ronja if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Köln-Ostheim will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Ronja already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ronja isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Köln-Ostheim early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ronja and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
