Roy

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 9 months

Roy and Jana came into the care of our friends in Spain in June 2022. The two playful long-legged dogs were rescued with their mother – and you might find it hard to believe, but the mother dog with the unmistakable greyhound blood is a purebred German Shepherd. When the trio was taken in, the female dog was naturally checked for a microchip, and surprisingly, there was indeed an entry with valid information. The owner came to pick up his long-missed female dog, but unfortunately showed no interest in taking care of the unexpected offspring. The animal welfare workers originally thought it would be easy to find a loving home for creatures like Roy and Jana, but now the siblings are nine months old (as of October 2022) and are still waiting for someone to invite them to leave the dull world of cages, concrete floors and bars to start a life as a beloved family member. Roy and Jana are wonderful beings who combine the best qualities of their breeds. Both have a calm and balanced temperament, which they probably owe to the Greyhound, but are also highly intelligent and very eager to learn – just like a German Shepherd. If you're already 60cm tall at 9 months, you may not be considered a small dog, but Jana and Roy are elegant, very slim-built dogs, who are often easier to handle than a Cocker Spaniel who uses its center of gravity to really get stuck on the leash. Still, Roy and Jana's ears are undecided (this could also remain this way, which would only add to the entertainment value of the two teenagers), their hind legs occasionally overtake their front legs while playing and you wonder how they manage to sort out these stilts that seem to have more joints than one would expect from anatomy class. A large part of their daily routine consists of eating, sleeping and growing, but soon the clumsy adolescents will become wonderful young adults who desperately need their own two legs to love them and explain the world to them. Jana and Roy are looking for humorous, active people who are willing to take on an unusual mix. Children are great, as long as they can stand firm on their feet when a greyhound zips past them – and also not resentful if you end up on your backside because the sprinting miracle has miscalculated a bit. Cats are usually not a problem for our running talents, but they are usually only the ones of their own, while cats from neighbors are much more at risk of entering the radar of the born hunters. If you feel called to give one of these beautiful photo models a home (or even both!), please feel free to contact our adoption officers, we look forward to seeing Roy and Jana soon on a couch, surrounded by people who will indulge their new best friend or best girlfriend (at least at the beginning, it is perfectly fine). This is a puppy.

DE·Show original

About Roy

What life with Roy looks like

Roy is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Roy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Roy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Roy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Roy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Roy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Roy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Roy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
