Rubi

Maltese · Female · Adult · 8 years

At a foster home in Kulmbach/Bayern! Rubi was exploited as a breeding dog in Spain for years and finally came to Germany as "retired." In her previous life, she never learned that human proximity could be positive. This experience is deeply ingrained and will likely accompany her throughout her life. However, Rubi has already shown in her foster family that a very playful little dog lies deep within her. She makes small progress every day and shows more and more her playful and cheerful face. In the house, Rubi is absolutely uncomplicated, relaxed, quiet, and sleeps a lot. She also loves the garden, where she likes to lie in the sun, watches over her territory a little, and gets along well with the other dogs in the group. She is not pushy, but she warms up when another dog seeks contact with her. Rubi has a problem with being touched or held "uninvited." But when she decides for herself, the world looks very different. In cozy moments on the sofa, she comes on her own, seeks body contact, lies down, and enjoys being stroked. One can then make wonderful nonsense with her and stroke her belly—so long as she knows she always has the option to get up and leave. She regularly has contact with strangers, with whom she generally has no problem, approaching them, sniffing, or sitting next to them. As long as they do not pay attention to her or immediately want to touch her, everything is fine. Rubi also proves that it is nonsense to "feed" the relationship with such a dog. She takes treats without problems, even from strangers. But to this day, such moments do not lead to her being touched by anyone. We have worked a lot with Rubi, so that a normal day with her works perfectly. She loves walks more than anything and sometimes even demands them a bit cheekily. To make the leash work half-way stress-free, Rubi has learned a routine: she goes to the sofa or a specific spot in the garden by herself. There, she knows what happens, stays calm, and lets herself be fitted with a harness and collar. Sometimes she can also be stopped at another spot. Outdoors, she now walks nicely, sometimes in front, sometimes back, often also very close to the person. No leash training as it is written in the book, but she has generally understood to orient herself to the person. The only condition is that the leash must stay loose. When tension arises, she gets stressed and wants to run away. With a bit of foresight, this can be managed or avoided. Environmental stimuli have never been a problem, and she discovers new walking routes very happily. But she will not settle for a beer garden. She rides in the car without a problem and also has no problem being alone for a few hours. Generally, Rubi learns better through everyday moments and conflicts on the side. If she does not even notice that she is being trained and is rehomed beautifully: "Look, it wasn't so dramatic, or?" As a trailing member of an existing dog group or as an unobtrusive second dog, she would feel most comfortable. We are therefore not looking for a place as a single dog. Some dogs are happy when they can disappear a little under the radar. Rubi is not a beginner dog, but honestly, she is no magic trick. One should still be familiar with the body language and its meaning behind the dogs. She has chosen a person to adore in our family, and she will surely do the same in a new family. She will not be everyone's darling.

About Rubi

What life with Rubi looks like

Rubi is a small adult maltese dog waiting at Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) in Vilseck.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rubi, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rubi?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rubi on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rubi if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rubi already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rubi isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Franz von Assisi Hundenothilfe e.V. (Hunde ohne Lobby) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rubi and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
