Meet Ruby, a beautiful Border Collie cross believed to be around 4–5 years old. She is very small for a collie and has been with Almost Home for two years. We don’t know much about Ruby’s early life, other than that she was found living on the streets, underweight and having had very little positive human interaction. She was due to be put to sleep before Almost Home stepped in to give her the second chance she so deserved. In recent months, Ruby has been living in foster care with two of our volunteers, where she has truly blossomed. Watching her experience so many firsts has been incredibly special – her first collar, first walk, first trip to the beach, first road trip, first time snuggled up on the sofa and her first proper night’s sleep in a quiet, loving home. Ruby is a curious little soul who always wants to know what’s being made for dinner! She’s very food motivated, which has been a huge help with her training. She is wonderful with other dogs and has settled beautifully alongside a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Golden Retriever in her foster home. Although Ruby is still timid and shy at times, she is learning every day that the world isn’t such a scary place. She loves her home comforts just as much as her adventures and is more than happy to curl up on the sofa afterwards or take her place as the passenger princess in the car. Seeing Ruby relaxed, smiling and content has been an absolute joy. She has come such a long way, and we know that with the right family, she has so much more to give. Ruby is looking for a calm and understanding home with a secure garden and another confident dog to help continue teaching her all the wonderful things life has to offer. We’ve found that she takes great comfort and direction from other dogs. She would be best suited to a home with children aged 14 and over and with someone who is willing to give her the time, patience and space she needs to continue growing in confidence. If you’re willing to let Ruby move at her own pace, you’ll be rewarded with one very special little girl who is finally learning what it means to be loved.
