Adopt Ruby

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Baby · 4 months

Rehabilitation help for Ruby, told by Sabine S.: "On my holiday in Sri Lanka, I went for a walk in the countryside. As usual, I encountered a variety of street dogs, which unfortunately are a common sight in this island state. If a dog is lucky, it belongs to a family. Then it lives on the property and is fed with rice/curry scraps. Otherwise, the street dogs somehow manage to survive. On this very walk, I found Ruby, a puppy, who was cowering behind a brick. I always had food with me and laid some down for the little female dog, but she hid even more. I asked the people who passed by about Ruby’s arrival, but no one knew anything about it – not even if there is a dog mom. So I took the little mouse with me. She was very thirsty, hungry, and scared. Later, lying on my lap, she slept for a long time, and I could first collect fleas. And see how small she really was, her skin scratched and red. This is also a common sight in the street: scratching, itchy animals. The next day, we took a 3-hour bus ride towards the coast. My backpack became Ruby’s safety place for the next few weeks. Whenever it got loud, which is quite often in Sri Lanka, she sank deeper into the backpack. We also went to the vet, where Ruby got her first vaccination, and I was covered with creams, powders, vitamin syrups, antibiotics, antihistamines, and worm tablets… What a good thing that I am a nurse! The first weeks, Ruby was still very afraid, but she slowly became braver, happier, and is now a healthy teenager after 4 months. Unfortunately, Ruby had to be taken to an animal shelter because I returned to Germany. I am grateful that she is well cared for there and can play with other dogs. With Ruby, there is now one less street dog in SL. This animal can be anxious in unfamiliar situations.

About Ruby

What life with Ruby looks like

Ruby is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed animal waiting at Tierhilfe Weidenberg in Germany.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Ruby far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ruby, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ruby?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierhilfe Weidenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ruby on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ruby if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierhilfe Weidenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ruby already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ruby isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierhilfe Weidenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ruby and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
