Adopt Kimbo

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

Kimbo is a handsome male dog with a lot of drive and energy. We took him in from another animal welfare association because it didn’t work out with him in the pack there. He is a clever, lively dog who is very friendly and cuddly with his trusted people. He excels in training and can become a great worker. Long walks, playtime, and cuddle sessions are absolutely his thing. We had rehomed Kimbo once, but unfortunately, he came back because after an adjustment period, he began to protect his people. It’s very important to show him that he doesn’t have to be the protector, and that his people can take care of themselves. However, he likes to decide when he thinks he can demonstrate his leadership skills. He is territorially motivated and needs clear rules and structure, which he accepts very gratefully. He even asks questions, which is why it’s very important to teach Kimbo. Kimbo is very poorly socialized with other dogs. It’s hard for him to think before he acts. The only setups that have worked at the animal shelter so far have been with very social and assertive herding dogs. Even then, living together wasn’t entirely smooth, as Kimbo often can’t handle resource competition well. We place him exclusively as a single dog. On the leash, he barks at other dogs very strongly, and it’s very challenging to walk him calmly and focused when there are dogs everywhere. Currently, Kimbo can handle dog encounters well if his person takes clear husbandry and leadership roles and manages the situation for him. If the external pressure becomes too intense due to overstimulation, it becomes difficult. However, since Kimbo is extremely intelligent and eager to learn, training with him can be a lot of fun for both of you. When Kimbo calms down, he shows his softer side as a clown, and he enjoys being petted and having his belly rubbed. In the house, he is house-trained and behaves quietly, especially if he has been well-exercised beforehand. Playing with his people is the greatest joy for Kimbo. However, he wants to be left alone when it comes to feeding. From the start, physical stimuli have always been a topic for Kimbo. Whether it’s cyclists, joggers, wild animals, or cars.

About Kimbo

What life with Kimbo looks like

Kimbo is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kimbo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kimbo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kimbo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kimbo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kimbo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kimbo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kimbo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
