Sergio

German Shepherd · Male · Young · 2 years

Catalan Shepherd Dog Sergio - A timid heart seeking safety Sergio's shaggy, deep black coat and intelligent eyes immediately captivate dog lovers. However, as a rescue dog, the beautiful Catalan Shepherd Dog brings his own heavy backpack. His past left deep scars: he had to live chained to a tree in the open, completely defenseless and without a warm shelter. He is currently waiting in a Spanish animal shelter for his big chance and is looking for people who can show him the way to a new life with a lot of patience. He is gentle but very shy. Sergio is one of the very shy dogs that the commotion in the shelter strongly unsettles. He usually sits quietly in his corner and prefers to observe the world from a safe distance. He approaches new situations and people with great skepticism at first. He needs a lot of time to even thaw. But behind this deep shyness lies a gentle nature. If you approach him gently and have a fine reward ready, he forgets his fear for a moment. With a little patience, he comes closer and even lets himself be stroked. Step by step. We are looking for empathetic people who can give Sergio the time he needs to arrive and who can gently build up his trust. Since he is a Catalan Shepherd Dog and shows a very sensitive, shy nature, there should already be dog experience in his new home - or at least a great and honest willingness to adjust to the needs of such a dog. A confident first dog in the new home would certainly be a great support for Sergio, on which he can orient himself. A foster home would also be a wonderful stepping stone for him. In a protected family environment, he could arrive in peace, gather first everyday experiences and show what a great companion really is in him. Here's Sergio's video

About Sergio

What life with Sergio looks like

Sergio is a large young adult german shepherd dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sergio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sergio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sergio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sergio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sergio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sergio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sergio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
