Snowflake
Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 3 years
We were able to save six sows from death at the slaughterhouse in March 2023. Today, all major slaughterhouses practice the particularly cruel CO2 stunning method, mainly because it is cost-effective. Fortunately, Snowflake also landed on the phone of Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. The pigs are driven down a shaft in cages into a shaft filled with carbon dioxide. The animals feel the gas before they reach the lowest point of the shaft, because in mammals, breathing is regulated by the CO2 content in the blood. It rises due to the gas concentration in the air. The animals react with deeper breathing, which further increases the CO2 content in the blood. The pigs get shortness of breath, they stretch their heads upwards, stand up and scream loudly. They panickedly try to escape. Fortunately, Snowflake also landed on the phone of Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. It takes at least 10, often even 30 seconds for the animals to lose their perception and sensitivity. During this time, the carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid on the moist mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and causes the animals stinging pain. Snowflake was very lucky to have escaped this fate, but she is still looking for godparents.
