Update: Spencer has moved to SOS Hundehilfe Prignitz e.V., our cooperative shelter (approximately 2 hours from TH Berlin). Visit www.sos-hundehilfe-prignitz.de. Please contact the staff there if you are interested in meeting Spencer. Spencer – a young giant puppy with a difficult start seeks an experienced home Spencer was found – a young Kangal that had its ears cropped in an animal welfare-violating manner on both sides. Apart from that, he was apparently not much cared for. He has not had much to learn and has a lot to catch up on. By now, he has mostly made it through puberty – with herding dogs known to be late bloomers – but just now, he needs even more clear, experienced guidance. What sets Spencer apart is that he is generally friendly, curious, and oriented towards people. He currently shows no pronounced territorial behavior or mistrust. He is eager to learn and open to new experiences. He would be good as a second dog – especially by the side of a confident, spayed female dog. In a quiet, stable environment with clear guidance, he can develop well. What you need to work on with him Spencer can turn on in certain situations, climbing on people and biting at their arms – which can be painful given his size and strength. He needs clear structures, preemptive management, and good guidance in everyday life. His education is far from complete – daily safety, frustration tolerance, and impulse control need to be further developed. As a herding dog, he may bring with him a strong territorial behavior that can become more pronounced with age. Interested parties should have experience handling large, powerful dogs. What he is looking for: A home with a house and a large, securely fenced garden – preferably rural or in a quiet suburban location. People with experience handling herding dogs or other large, demanding breeds. Time, patience, and the willingness to guide him consistently but lovingly. A confident primary caregiver who can set clear rules from the start. No small children in the home, no cramped urban living conditions. Preferably a confident female dog by his side. Do you want to meet Spencer? Then contact the staff at SOS Hundehilfe Prignitz or fill out the form below – we will forward this to them.

About Spencer

What life with Spencer looks like

Spencer is a large adult dog waiting at Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg in Berlin.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Cropped ears (non-veterinary), requires extensive training for impulse control and frustration tolerance, needs secure fencing due to livestock guardian instincts

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spencer, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spencer?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spencer on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spencer if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spencer already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spencer isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Berlin Falkenberg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spencer and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
