Adopt Spikey

Mixed Breed · Unknown

By the age of six months, Spikey was first bred, then confined in a crate for three days to ensure pregnancy. But Spikey did not become pregnant and was therefore sorted for slaughter. She arrived at the shelter with other sows from different groups, all crammed into a large pen where she had to endure a ranking fight, but she was spared the trauma of being confined in a farrowing crate for five weeks and then having her piglets taken away. A trauma that mother sows must endure twice over several years before they are sorted for slaughter. The pig farmer could have received 250 € from the dealer for Spikey's body. But Spikey was lucky. She is now allowed to spend the rest of her life in our foster home Erflinghausen, in a straw-filled stall with plenty of light. From the stall, she can see the sky and feel the sun on her skin in the outdoor run. It is difficult to buy mother sows out of the slaughter pipeline, as the operations are isolated. Spikey and her seven companions owe their rescue to an incredibly engaged and resilient vegan, who has the trust of a pig farm operator. She regularly visits the operation and is allowed to search for living spaces for "retired" sows and not for marketable piglets. Happily, she pays less than the slaughter price for one sow and nothing for the piglets. Her work deserves the highest respect, and such rescue channels are very vulnerable to drying up because the operations fear militant animal advocates. Therefore, we do not write anything more about the origin of Spikey and her seven companions Annalena, Blue, Joy, Nuria, Pinky, Rosalind, and Sam, who were so fortunate. But now they need sponsors for a carefree life!

About Spikey

What life with Spikey looks like

Spikey is a medium-sized adult mixed breed animal waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Spikey far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Spikey, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Spikey?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Spikey on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Spikey if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Spikey already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Spikey isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Spikey and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
