Adopt Shelly

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 3 years

At our Shelly, the name of the game is! - because a real collar has gone missing from our unbridled mixed-breed female dog. Setting aside the humor, one of the reasons for her "wild" behavior is both a lack of past upbringing and unfortunately the shelter manager, who puts her under immense stress. We wish to find an appropriate home for Shelly, where she can flourish and develop into a balanced, yet still active female dog that people can finally recognize as reliable social partners. Despite how feisty, temperamental, and distant Shelly may appear to humans, she also greatly enjoys the time spent together and makes this clear. Therefore, we are looking for active and settled adopters who can catch her pent-up stress and the associated accumulated energy and frustration, then transform it into something positive together with Shelly. For example, a shared hobby like mantrailing or similar activities, where she must keep her senses together and concentrate, combined with a shared sport, could certainly make a difference. In principle, Shelly is friendly towards people, albeit not very polite, but she is currently increasingly prone to becoming highly agitated when handing over the leash for a walk, which is caused by high expectations, frustration, and stress. This is partly expressed outwardly through loud and persistent barking, pulling on the leash, and lunging at people. Due to her longer time in the animal shelter, she also now snaps at sleeves and jackets, which is why she is only given walks with a muzzle. This is being worked on by her trusted people in the shelter context. These are all topics that, with a positive and relaxed mood, as well as consistency and a calmer environment, will likely soon be in the past.

About Shelly

What life with Shelly looks like

Shelly is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Leipzig in Leipzig.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Currently requires muzzle for walks due to stress-related behaviors including snapping at clothing. Needs behavioral rehabilitation and stress management.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Shelly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Shelly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Leipzig handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Shelly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Shelly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Leipzig will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Shelly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Shelly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Leipzig early rather than rehoming privately; they know Shelly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
