Tjerek

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

Papers are ready and Tjerek has been successfully rehomed since October 2016… They like to walk together and have already shared a night in the same bed, Tjereck and his new dog friend… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. My name is Tjereck. I am male, neutered, microchipped and born around 2008. I have been waiting for a new home since October 2015. I am about 60 cm tall. This is what my caregivers say about me: Tjereck arrived here through indirect means and was an overseas dog. During the first adoption attempt in the new home, the owners were overwhelmed despite good explanation. In addition to the fear issues, his desire for freedom came into play, as low fences or climbing opportunities were used for extensive but independent excursions. His shyness towards people has improved, but he is still cautious. However, training in an enclosed area works well, he loves walks and is easy to lead. Work must continue on the basic trust, patience until the bond is formed, and controlled off-leash time in the property if available in the new home, must be brought with commitment. Leaving the property and giving Tjereck freedom in the garden is currently taboo until he is truly settled and has trust in his people. A secure accommodation must be provided, which is not necessary for apartment living. Tjereck must be consistently and lovingly introduced to environmental stimuli to finally allow him a stress-free life. During a blood test, Anaplasmosis was detected, he is symptom-free, we are still in the middle of the diagnostics under the supervision of our attending veterinarian, results will follow. In principle, Tjereck can lead a normal dog life with minimal financial effort. Otherwise, he is never aggressive in any situation, he rather keeps distance, if he feels fear. During examinations, he patiently endured everything and rather froze. Other animals are no problem, rather advantageous, if compatible, other animals would need to be tested. We have the impression that he feels more comfortable in company and can relax faster, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. Tjereck seeks people who feel confident they can devote enough patience to Tjereck, both wanting and being able to, so that later, after learning and practicing, he can be given the freedom he loves. He will reward you with his trust and be your biggest fan for life….the other side of dogs with fear problems…once you have gained their trust, you never lose it again….The descriptions are impressions and recordings of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in the new home.

About Tjerek

What life with Tjerek looks like

Tjerek is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tjerek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tjerek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tjerek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tjerek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tjerek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tjerek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tjerek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
