Toby

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 8 years

Toby is looking for an experienced home with heart and mind. Toby is an approximately 8-year-old dog from Spain, currently living in a foster home in Germany. His previous life was probably characterized by kennel or chain keeping as a guard dog - accordingly, he has some "old problems," but at the same time shows great potential for the right people. In everyday life, Toby is generally manageable in the apartment, provided he is sufficiently occupied. He is housebroken, already knows basic commands like "sit" and "stay," and waits politely during feeding. Toby is very eager to learn, intelligent, and works enthusiastically for treats - it is clearly noticeable that he wants to please. At the same time, he has typical behaviors of a former guard dog: He reacts territorially, barks at noises in the stairwell or in front of the house, and meets strangers with suspicion. In such situations, he can growl, bark, and in serious cases even move forward, which is why responsible handling and appropriate safety measures are essential. The started muzzle training must definitely be continued consistently - also in view of veterinary visits. With other dogs, Toby is compatible depending on sympathy. He usually accepts calm dogs, whether male or female. However, pushy or barking dogs, as well as those that rush at him uncontrollably, are problematic. Therefore, good acceptance of a muzzle is also important for safe off-leash walking. There should be no small children or other pets in the household. Toby chases cats, while he reacts more neutrally towards larger animals such as horses or poultry. Toward his attachment figures, Toby shows a completely different side: He is very affectionate, cuddly, and builds a close bond. He loves spending time together, wants to belong, and is always happy to be involved. Walks are among his highlights - currently, he goes several kilometers 3-4 times a day, which also benefits him physically, as he still needs to build up muscle. Being left alone is still difficult for Toby and must be trained step by step. Currently, this is expressed through barking and scratching at doors. He will not be alone for many hours. For Toby, we are looking for a quiet, ground-floor home with experienced, confident people, ideally retired people or individuals with lots of time and understanding for strong-willed dogs. Consistency, patience, and joy in training are important - combined with empathy and clear leadership. Toby is not an "beginner's dog," but for the right people, he is a loyal, smart, and very loving companion who is far from being old. Whoever gives Toby a chance will be rewarded with a loyal partner ready to go through life together.

About Toby

What life with Toby looks like

Toby is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toby, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toby?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toby on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toby if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Toby already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toby isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toby and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
