Adopt Toffee

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Toffee was rehomed as a puppy by us and was sadly returned to us after years, as his owners were overwhelmed by his behavior and their living circumstances had changed. In his teenage years, Toffee attended dog training classes for half a year and joined a guided playgroup in 2022 for further socialization. He has a friendly nature with his trusted people, but he is fearful and insecure in situations where he feels threatened, which can lead to him snapping or biting. Although there have been some incidents in the past, his immediate family that lived with him was not affected. Towards strangers, Toffee is initially mistrustful out of fear and insecurity, as he has learned that he does not receive help from his primary caregiver in these supposedly threatening situations, so an attack is the best defense. His insecurity and his "wanting-to-grow-big" behavior are also shown through marking and digging on walks. The delicate Toffee is house-trained, could stay alone for hours in the previous home, and travels well in the car. He looks forward to meeting other dogs on walks, even though he has the habit of focusing and staring at them like a herding dog. Toffee met many playmates on walks in his previous home, with whom he played exuberantly and intensively. However, in the confines and stress of our shelter, there are also male dogs that Toffee does not like. We would rehome him as a single dog or to a confident female dog. Toffee is very trainable, knows the basic commands well, and even some tricks. To earn his trust, one must observe what kind of cuddles and closeness he enjoys. With his trusted people, Toffee loves to be playful and cuddly – he can be cuddled for long periods, and he especially enjoys playing with his human. However, a muzzle is necessary during visits or confrontations with strangers, and Toffee accepts it without issue. The insecure male dog must continue to learn that visitors do not mean anything negative for him. Toffee requires dog-experienced guidance to overcome his situational insecurity and learn to take responsibility. He is very energetic and loves long walks and also "head games." Children should not live in his future home. People with a good understanding of dogs, who take him seriously and, above all, take on all his responsibilities, would be ideal. We wish for him to continue learning to feel positively about people, not just his trusted people. Even though Toffee has his challenges, he is a grateful companion who builds good trust with his primary caregiver and can be a great life partner. Trust and confidence are the keys to his heart. This animal was surrendered to the shelter.

About Toffee

What life with Toffee looks like

Toffee is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Bonn in Bonn.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Toffee, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Toffee?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bonn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Toffee on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Toffee if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bonn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Toffee already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Toffee isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bonn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Toffee and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
