💗 TONKA 💗 SABINE 📍 Location: Sisak, Croatia – can be visited on-site 🐾 General Information: • Name: TONKA • Age: born on 11.05.2022 • Gender: female • Breed: Mini-Labrador mix 🐾 Health: • Overall condition: good • Microchipped • Treated against internal and external parasites • Vaccinated against infectious diseases • Vaccinated against rabies • Spayed • Weight: approx. 11 kg • Height: approx. 45 cm • Body length: approx. 43 cm The descriptions of the dogs provided by the foster homes in Croatia are based on current impressions from their time on site and do not guarantee the dog’s future behavior or development. 🐾 Character & Behavior: Tonka is a gentle and sensitive dog who isn’t one of those who immediately run up to strangers and seek closeness. She needs time, patience, and people who understand that trust cannot be forced—it must be allowed to grow slowly. Since July 12, 2023, Tonka has been living at a Croatian animal shelter. When she first arrived, she was severely traumatized, very frightened, and completely withdrawn. Even today, she still carries some insecurities, but she’s slowly making small yet important progress. Toward humans, Tonka remains cautious and reserved. Yet, she’s never aggressive—she just still often finds the world frightening and uncertain. She allows closeness and can be picked up, but she needs people who respect her boundaries and provide her with a sense of security. She gets along well with other dogs and shows herself to be social. She ignores cats and behaves calmly and composed toward them. In general, Tonka is an active young dog. Due to her fears, however, she’s currently not yet comfortable walking on a leash. She needs people who give her time and help her get to know the world step by step, at her own pace, in a safe environment. 🐾 Special Preferences: • Social with other dogs • Calm and composed around cats • Gentle and sensitive nature • Quiet and unobtrusive • Already showing small signs of progress in building trust • Active dog with potential for further development • Needs security and stable, reliable caregivers 🏡 Your Dream Home: 💗 A calm home without hustle and bustle 💗 People with experience handling fearful dogs 💗 Patient and understanding people 💗 Stable routines and a sense of security 💗 Preferably with a confident, established dog as a companion 💗 A home where she can settle in at her own pace Tonka isn’t looking for the “perfect” person—she’s looking for someone willing to give her a chance and lovingly accompany her on her journey. 💌 How You Can Help: ❣️ Adopt ❣️ Offer foster care ❣️ Share—so TONKA can finally find her family 🐾❤️ Videos of Tonka: Tonka on a leash Tonka being petted

About Tonka

What life with Tonka looks like

Tonka is a very small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Hund sucht Hütte in Austria.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Tonka, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Tonka?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hund sucht Hütte handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Tonka on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Tonka if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hund sucht Hütte will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Tonka already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Tonka isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hund sucht Hütte early rather than rehoming privately; they know Tonka and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
