Uno

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Baby · 4 months

His story began during one of the darkest periods for stray dogs in the city. After months of mass poisonings that killed more than 200 dogs, the streets had become eerily empty. One night, on a city promenade where almost no dogs remained, there was only Uno, a tiny 1kg puppy desperately searching through trash bins looking for food and trying to survive. He was rescued just in time. During his first days, Uno had to be bottle-fed because he was still so little and vulnerable. Thankfully, he quickly showed what a little fighter he was. Once he learned to eat independently, he progressed beautifully. He received proper veterinary care from the beginning, including timely vaccinations and safe quarantine, allowing him to grow up healthy and protected from the infectious diseases so many street puppies sadly face. But while Uno survived physically, emotionally he grew into a very sensitive and uncertain soul. He spent his early life around adult dogs and naturally became the quieter one in the group. He would move aside rather than compete, never quite managing to reach the toys or put himself first. Eventually, he formed a very strong attachment to a large male dog who became his protector and role model. Uno followed him everywhere, finding safety and confidence simply by being near him. That nature is still very much part of who he is today. Uno is kind, calm, and deeply non-confrontational by nature. He can initially appear shy, withdrawn, and somewhat confused in new situations, almost as though he is constantly worried about doing something wrong. He needs time to understand routines, expectations, and environments before he can fully relax. Once he feels safe, though, his true personality slowly appears, quiet affection, soft loyalty, and a peaceful companionship that feels incredibly special. He is not a demanding dog. Quite the opposite. Uno is careful and unobtrusive. He walks well on a lead. In fact, walks can sometimes feel a little emotional with Uno because he often looks to his human for reassurance, quietly following along rather than confidently exploring the world himself. He sniffs a little, observes everything carefully, and tries very hard to understand what is expected of him. One thing his foster noticed is that Uno needs time to fully relax outside, especially when it comes to toileting. Because he only truly feels safe once settled, he would sometimes wait until returning indoors before finally relaxing enough to poop. Interestingly, when staying somewhere with a secure garden and more time to decompress outdoors, this became much easier for him. It’s another small sign of how emotionally sensitive he is to his environment and how much stability matters to him. Uno has also lived through constant changes in boarding facilities and temporary accommodations, and those repeated transitions have understandably left him feeling unsettled and unsure of where he truly belongs. Dogs like Uno do not thrive through instability, they thrive through routine, patience, and emotional security. Despite all this, there has recently been a very interesting shift in his behavior. After finally settling more comfortably into his most recent boarding environment, Uno has started showing a little more confidence and personality, even becoming slightly pushy with other male dogs at times as if testing whether he could finally be “the boss” for once. It is likely less true dominance and more a reflection of a dog who is beginning to feel secure enough to express himself after spending most of his life quietly stepping aside for everyone else. He has also shown himself to be good with children, especially calmer kids who respect his gentle nature. He enjoys affection and human companionship deeply but prefers peaceful energy rather than loud chaos. He has been around cats as well and did not react badly to them, mostly choosing to avoid them rather than engage. Uno is the kind of dog whose personality blooms slowly. He is not the dog who bursts into a room demanding attention immediately. He is the dog who quietly watches, learns, adapts, and then slowly forms incredibly deep bonds once he realizes he is finally safe. What he truly needs now is permanence. A stable, understanding home. A patient person willing to give him time to decompress and discover life at his own pace. Someone who understands that behind the uncertainty is an incredibly good, loving dog who has simply never had the consistency needed to fully relax into himself. Because once Uno finally understands that he is home for good, there is no doubt that he will become the most loyal and gentle companion imaginable.

Frequently asked

Adopting Uno, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Uno?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Amospet handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Uno on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Uno if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Amospet will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Uno already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Uno isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Amospet early rather than rehoming privately; they know Uno and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
