Wanda

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 4 years

Rarely has the term "sighthound" come to mind so immediately as when looking at Wanda's photos for the first time. This extremely beautiful creature came into the care of our Spanish partners about two weeks ago. Along with her friend, a pregnant female dog, she was found in an industrial area and fortunately secured before the Civil Guard could get hold of her.... While Wanda's four-legged companion could move into a foster home due to her pregnancy, our thin beauty had only the animal shelter available. However, Wanda seems to feel relatively comfortable here. If a filled bowl, a roof over her head, and some peace are already almost paradise for a dog, it becomes clear how deprived her life must have been before. Naturally, Wanda is a popular playmate, because one can race and spin around with her beautifully. Moreover, she, typical of a sighthound, is very harmonious and stays out of all conflicts. Despite her young age of about two years (as of August 2022), Wanda is already very balanced and spends the hot summer days relaxed with long naps. The ribs and hip bones no longer protrude as clearly, her eyes have cleared, and her expression has changed from brokenness towards "hopeful" and "a bit mischievous." Furthermore, Wanda is a real cuddle monster: as soon as one of the volunteers enters her cage, she immediately takes them over, licking them from top to bottom. Then either her head including ears is offered for scratching or right away her belly - and then everything all over again! Anyone who welcomes our cuddly ball with the elegant body in their heart and home will have a real unique pet, we are sure of that. Do you have a suitable throne, excuse me, a large sofa with an appropriate number of cushions and blankets free for our long-legged princess? Then your majesty will graciously announce her desire to move in with you!

About Wanda

What life with Wanda looks like

Wanda is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Wanda, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Wanda?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Wanda on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Wanda if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Wanda already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Wanda isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Wanda and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
