Adopt Wickie

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Adult · 6 years

The one who is believed to have been born in 2014, a Friesian milk sheep, came from a flock in Lower Saxony and was seized by the Diepholz Veterinary Office in April 2020 along with around 100 other sheep. The herd was severely neglected; the animals had no water and far too little feed, were extremely emaciated, and suffered from a heavy worm infestation. Thirty-seven already deceased sheep were found in a stable – the owner had not even bothered to remove the animal carcasses. Unfortunately, veterinary offices rarely, if ever, become aware of animal welfare violations in time, so it is cause for celebration when animals are seized and irresponsible animal owners are held accountable. But unfortunately, "production animals" usually do not escape slaughter either. They are handed over to another operation that fattens them up until they are once again "marketable." Wickie was, however, extremely lucky: Our foster home Rehden had just enough space for a few sheep and caretaker Hartmut had become aware of the seized herd. The dealer who took them over willingly gave eight sheep and a ewe with her two lambs to Schutzengel für Tiere at the slaughter price. He donated the sheep free of charge and brought them to us at the foster home. We keep finding that "livestock dealers" are happy to use us to do a little good work once in a while. But it is always horrifying to have to select animals for rescue from such stables, knowing that all the others must go to the slaughterhouse. A day after Hartmut Ritter and Petra Wintersohl had selected the happy sheep at the dealer, Wickie gave birth to her daughter Wölkchen there. It was a great blessing for the two that Wölkchen is female, because then Wickie could be saved with her child. A second strong ramling would not have been allowed. While all male animals are of course neutered, sheep rams still consider each other competitors and cause unrest in the herd. And in the foster home, there are also six elderly Moor sheep dams, which would not fare well. Now fill out the sponsorship declaration.

About Wickie

What life with Wickie looks like

Wickie is a medium-sized adult mixed breed animal waiting at Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. in Drolshagen.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Wickie far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Wickie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Wickie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Wickie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Wickie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Wickie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Wickie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schutzengel für Tiere e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Wickie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
