Zwerghamster

Mixed Breed · Unknown

The husbandry of Zwerghamster is more demanding than many assume: The "home" of a hamster should have a minimum floor space of 100 x 50 cm, with deep, varied bedding so that it can dig. A chinchilla sand bath for fur care, a large running wheel, many houses, and hiding places. For cleaning the enclosure, not everything should be completely replaced, but only parts, as he needs his scent marks. The hamster needs space to move around. This is usually at night, when the dwarfs go on their tours, so it is not optimal for small children. Additionally, it is an observation animal that does not like to be picked up. Its daily sleep should also not be disturbed, as they tolerate this poorly. The diet should consist of an appropriate mix of different seeds, grain types, herbs, and animal protein. Since Zwerghamster is prone to diabetes, no sugar, fruit, or dried vegetables should be fed. We are looking for a single-housing, animal-appropriate home for the dwarfs; they are loners.

DE·Show original

About Zwerghamster

What life with Zwerghamster looks like

Zwerghamster is a large adult mixed breed animal waiting at Tierheim Hof in Hof.

Every animal has their own temperament and history. The shelter knows Zwerghamster far better than any listing can convey — ask about daily routine, ideal household, and what kind of adopter they're hoping for.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zwerghamster, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zwerghamster?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Hof handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zwerghamster on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zwerghamster if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Hof will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zwerghamster already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most animals on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zwerghamster isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Hof early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zwerghamster and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
