Pumba kwam met zijn moeder en twee broers toen we in Epirus waren voor de 8e sterilisatie actie. Ze was maar een maand oud destijds en nog steeds aan het zogen. Het hele gezin kwam met ons naar Athene. Het kleine dier werd afgezond, groeide verder en werd een hoge, slanke en indrukwekkende hond. Deze kleuren en deze ontwerpen op zijn gezicht maken hem eruitzien alsof hij een kunstmatige masker draagt. Hij was altijd heel, heel, heel lief jong dier, en terwijl we in actie waren, werd hij gesteriliseerd, hij was onze favoriet, omdat hij het dikste was, het meest schuchtere en de enige van zijn broertjes die niet wit was. Bij het opgroeien was het altijd de puppy die geen initiatief nam, maar probeerde de andere pups te imiteren. Als zijn vriendjes speelden met een speelgoed, probeerde hij ook te spelen. Als zijn vriendjes renden, rende hij ook. Als zijn vriendjes naar mensen gingen voor aandacht, ging hij ook, laatst, met een onschuld en aarzeling die erg leuk was. Als je hem aanraakt, raak je de meest speciale vacht aan die je in een hond kunt vinden (in ons ogen!). Het is dik, krullend, hoewel niet lang genoeg om te krullen, met harde haren en te dik. TE dik. De vingers passen niet om binnen te komen en de huid te raken. Deze schapenvacht samen met zijn onschuldige persoonlijkheid maakt hem bijzonder. Pumba is een hond die wil zelfverzekerd zijn, maar weet niet hoe. Hij was te afhankelijk van zijn broer toen hij klein was, en begon later zich vast te klampen aan andere honden in het asiel. Als hij alleen is, is hij helemaal niet zelfverzekerd, terwijl als er een andere hond op zijn wandeling of in zijn ruimte is, hij veel openbaarder is, en dit is binnen de kaders van zijn persoonlijkheid. Het is de hond die tijd nodig heeft om zich te openen en zelfvertrouwen te krijgen, maar zal medewerkend zijn, ook al is hij schuw. We houden veel van hem. Misschien is het omdat hij zo onschuldig is, misschien omdat hij de enige van hen allen is. VIDEO

Pumba came with his mother and two siblings when we were in Epirus for our 8th spay and neuter mission. He was only one month old at the time and was still nursing. The whole family came back to Athens with us. The little one was weaned, grew up, grew some more, and turned into a tall, lean, strikingly handsome dog. He was always an incredibly sweet baby. During the spay and neuter mission, he was everyone’s favorite because he was the chubbiest, the shyest, and the only one among his siblings who wasn’t pure white. As he grew up, he was always the puppy who wouldn’t take initiative on his own, but would try to copy the other puppies. If his friends were playing with a toy, he would try to play too. If they ran, he would run too. If they went up to people for cuddles, he would follow them, always last, with such innocence and hesitation that it made you want to hold him and tell him not to worry, not to be afraid, and that he was doing everything just right. If you touch him, you’ll feel what is, in our opinion, the most unique coat a dog can have. It’s dense, almost curly even though it’s not long enough to form curls, with coarse hair and an unbelievably thick undercoat. VERY thick. Your fingers can barely get through it to reach his skin. That sheep-like coat, combined with his innocent personality, makes him truly special. Pumba is a dog who wants to feel confident, but doesn’t quite know how yet. When he’s alone, he lacks confidence, but when another dog is around during walks or in his space, he becomes much more open and expressive. Still, this has slowly started to change. Pumba goes on walks regularly with our volunteers and has gradually become more affectionate and outgoing, even when there isn’t another dog beside him. He may still need some time to fully open up and trust, but he is cooperative despite his shyness. He has also stayed in a foster home, which helped us learn more about him. He is incredibly gentle and loving with the people who care for him, but hesitant around strangers. He’s not the kind of dog who gets excited when visitors come over, and ideally he shouldn’t be pressured into interacting with people he doesn’t trust. He bonds deeply with the person who takes care of him and spends the most time with him, and he may even remain cautious around family members he doesn’t know well. Pumba needs proper guidance and handling so his insecurities won’t stand in the way of his happiness. The ideal home for him would be a calm household without many people or small children. He could live with another dog, as long as there is balance and clear boundaries for both animals. VIDEO
