Akira

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 4 months

We are often asked by people interested in adoption why we make them fill out lengthy questionnaires. The story of our barely eight-month-old Akira (as of 11/2021) proves that animal welfare also means protecting dogs from the wrong home and the wrong family. Like so many dogs in Southern Europe, Akira was adopted directly from the animal shelter when she was still a small ball of fur. Her former family happened to be nearby, they looked at the four-legged animals, the children loved the funny puppy, the parents were unsure - but, since they were already there, they just took the (still compact) playmate for the kids. It turned out as it had to. From the small fluffy wool ball who slept 20 hours a day and convinced everyone with extreme cuteness, Akira became an energetic young dog. Akira grew strong, wanted to learn and be occupied - the children were in school, lost interest, the parents started arguing, and you often heard the sentence "I told you so." When Akira then entered puberty and began to look for mental stimulation where there was only boredom, the wonderful young female dog had to return to the animal shelter - and of course, the affectionate girl doesn't understand the world anymore. Fortunately, Akira is a real sunbeam and quickly got used to the new, silly situation, but we really hope that the cheerful and smart female dog will find a new family very soon. This time, though, it has to be people who are aware of the responsibility that comes with adopting a pet - and thus a new family member. We are looking for humorous, loving people who can explain the world to the little lady, who want to learn and play with her, and preferably real experts in cuddling and stroking. Akira is an outdoor dog. When she sees a volunteer with a leash in hand near her crate, she is firmly (and unshakably) convinced that she should definitely go on the walk, regardless of the weather or time of day. If you would like to offer Akira a dog bed, then you should also be nature-loving and ideally already own sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing - and if you now realize that you meet all these criteria, please contact us, Akira is already packed and ready to go!

About Akira

What life with Akira looks like

Akira is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Akira, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Akira?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Akira on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Akira if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Akira already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Akira isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Akira and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
