Adopt Alvar

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy

Alvar is a male born around 2021, a Belgian shepherd with great potential but also specific needs. He is a typical representative of the breed: quick, intelligent, energetic and always ready to act. He loves play! Tugs and balls are his world. Plaything is the best reward for him and the key to building a relationship. He has a great need to chew, so the future owner must take care of proper outlet for this need. Alvar knows basic commands and likes to work with people, but he is not yet strongly motivated to work longer and not everyone will be trusted immediately and not everyone will be able to approach him. However, with a person he trusts and in whom he sees support, he behaves phenomenally! He is not a shy or aggressive dog, because in difficult situations he rather withdraws and avoids conflict. However, his past means he needs an aware and experienced guardian. With familiar people, he is stable and predictable. He builds contact with people on his own terms. Maybe he still needs time to open up, or perhaps that's just how he is - a bit independent, but loyal to "his own". Alvar needs a responsible, consistent and experienced guardian who knows the breed or wants to work consciously with it. He is a dog for someone who appreciates his character and gives him clear rules, as well as satisfying his needs - activity and security. He definitely does not tolerate cats, and with dogs it varies. He should go to a home without children and other animals. He is not an "easy" dog, but for the right person can be an amazing partner, and an experienced guardian who is aware of the breed's needs will get a great dog with great potential. Observations during a walk through the forest, then through a small town (dated 16-04-2026): After taking care of physiological needs and releasing excess energy, the dog functions wonderfully in an environment with more stimuli. On seeing dogs behind a fence, he shows excitement, but after the command "leave it, let's go", he beautifully returns to normal walking routine. He nicely passes a few people with dogs on leashes - he also reacts to the command and returns to balance, and when passing strangers - one he decided to go around in an arc, with the second he walked along the leg.

Alvar to samiec urodzony ok. 2021, owczarek belgijski o ogromnym potencjale, ale też o konkretnych potrzebach. To typowy przedstawiciel rasy: szybki, inteligentny, energiczny i zawsze gotowy do działania. Powinien trafić do domu bez dzieci i bez innych zwierząt.

About Alvar

What life with Alvar looks like

Alvar is a medium-sized puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku in Poland.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Alvar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Alvar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Alvar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Alvar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Alvar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Alvar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko dla Zwierząt w Słupsku early rather than rehoming privately; they know Alvar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
