Adopt Opal

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 10 years

Opal, a dog born in 2016. Opal is a very strong and exceptionally energetic dog. He has been with us for almost three years, but he didn't immediately show his true nature. At first, he seemed gentle and positively oriented towards life. Over time, however, it became clear that Opal is really unresponsive and wants to dominate his caregivers. This happened around the time he matured after a period of starvation and gained strength. The biggest problems were with him during any grooming procedures, which he did not enjoy at all. It took three caregivers to hold him while brushing his fur. Opal is a truly unique dog who wants to do only what he feels like. He would much rather run around in the yard unbothered by anyone. After a few hours of running, Opal returns to his kennel noticeably calmer, so this might be his way. Every day, he is full of energy to the point that he can move the shed in his kennel. However, on the leash, he pulls hard and is difficult to hold. Currently weighing 35 kilograms, he is not a small dog and it's no wonder he has so much strength and energy. His appetite is excessive, and he always devours his portion of food very quickly. Sometimes, Opal gnaws on the boards in his kennel, which can be problematic. We are looking for an experienced, responsible caregiver who can handle this characterful and problematic dog. The person adopting Opal will definitely have to ensure he gets plenty of exercise to drain his energy. He needs something to do to keep him occupied and from causing trouble. Taking care of such a dog is undoubtedly a great responsibility, so we ask for thoughtful decisions. Opal is neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, and spayed.

Opal, pies urodzony w 2016r.

About Opal

What life with Opal looks like

Opal is a extra-large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) in Poland.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Opal, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Opal?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Opal on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Opal if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Opal already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Opal isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Janik (Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Opal and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
