Amelia

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 89 years

A runway in the middle of nowhere, a stray female dog, and some animal-loving staff on the airfield - these were the ingredients for a happy ending in Amelia's case... The extremely beautiful young lady with the fluffy fur appeared one beautiful day at the mentioned airfield. No one knew where she came from, and since staying there was extremely dangerous for the shy but very people-oriented dog and also not possible for safety reasons, she was repeatedly tried to be chased away. However, there are no houses, no trees offering shade, no water, no food, and naturally no people around the airfield - and so Amelia kept returning to the place where she at least found some water, food, and a shady spot to sleep. At some point, the staff could no longer watch how the homeless beauty sought more and more contact and was denied it, and they called our Spanish partners, who immediately took care of Amelia. In keeping with Amelia's first "adoption," she was named after pilot Amelia Earhart, who flew off in July 1937 and has been missing ever since... Our Amelia should never be considered missing, but we would certainly wish her a little more freedom than she now has in the animal shelter. At just seven months old (as of September 2022), she has already experienced a lot, overcome cold, hunger, thirst, and heat, and surely hasn't always had a roof over her head in heavy rain, and we are certain that Amelia will appreciate the luxury of a couch or a soft dog bed more than many other dogs. Naturally, our little backfisch gets along very well with all the four-legged colleagues. Amelia is obviously happy not having to lead a lonely vagabond life anymore and plays and runs with the other young dogs as if there were no tomorrow. Initially, Amelia is a little reserved towards two-legged beings, but quickly warms up and gives into endless cuddles once she has overcome her shyness. We wish for Amelia a loving home with fun and patient people who can teach her the basics of small dog behavior and maybe a little nonsense, showing her that she can safely leave her past behind and will never be lonely again.

DE·Show original

About Amelia

What life with Amelia looks like

Amelia is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Amelia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Amelia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Amelia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Amelia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Amelia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Amelia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Amelia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
