Adopt Anton

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 8 years

Gender: male dog Born on: December 2018 Breed: American Bulldog – mixed breed At the animal shelter since: 30.03.2022 insecure house-trained rides well in the car can be left alone No children or cats gets along with female dogs Anton was given up by his previous owner to an acquaintance due to being overwhelmed. The acquaintance tried unsuccessfully to find him a new home, which is why he ended up with us. Anton is an absolute dream indoors and happily greets every visitor. He loves to cuddle, is house-trained, knows basic commands, and can also stay alone nicely for several hours. With his previous owners, he showed strong insecurity outdoors, which we believe was unintentionally reinforced. When given security, he looks to his humans for guidance and then handles new situations well. Over the past years, he has shown absolutely no aggression toward people or other dogs. He walks without issues alongside other dogs and quickly makes friends with new walking companions—slightly faster with women than with men. Due to his history, however, we would only place him in a child-free household. Anton loves bathing and insists on having a kiddie pool in his new home 😉 Unfortunately, Anton is not compatible with cats. He was supposedly incompatible with other dogs as well, but we could imagine that he might actually get along with a friendly, confident female dog. Please note that Anton, as an American Bulldog, is classified as a restricted breed ("Listenhund") in some German states. As if his chances of adoption weren’t already quite poor, he also has a front paw deformity that occasionally causes scrapes, as well as a spinal cyst leading to neurological issues. None of this bothers Anton, though—he just waddles cheerfully along 🙂 These conditions aren’t treatable, but physiotherapy would certainly do him good. Sadly, he’s the end result of severe irresponsible breeding… Anton isn’t a sporty dog and wouldn’t enjoy city outings or large, noisy crowds. He prefers staying in his familiar surroundings with his trusted humans—splashing around in the garden, taking short walks, and receiving plenty of affectionate pats.

About Anton

What life with Anton looks like

Anton is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Lübbecke in Lübbecke.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Anton, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Anton?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Lübbecke handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Anton on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Anton if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Lübbecke will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Anton already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Anton isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Lübbecke early rather than rehoming privately; they know Anton and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
