Askana

German Shepherd · Female · Adult · 8 years

Askana is a beautiful long-haired female dog whose owner has passed away. Unfortunately, the family was unable to take her in... This sweet furry companion is now looking for a forever home. Toward people, the lovely girl is super friendly. She enjoys being brushed and cuddled, and loves her walks in the city forest, which always seem far too short to her. She does lack attention, however, which is why she often barks sadly in her kennel and is constantly on edge. Askana knows the command "Sit," walks well on the leash, and is responsive when no other dogs are approaching (see here and here in the videos). Unfortunately, she does not get along with other dogs at all and does not want any contact with them! Responsible dog owners with foresight are needed here; Askana is walked with a muzzle, which she tolerates very well. We are looking for experienced German Shepherd enthusiasts (without children or other dogs) who understand the nature of this breed and can handle her accordingly. At our shelter she appears a little restless, presumably due to kennel living. She enjoys occasional sprints on walks; here you can see her sprinting through puddles on the long line :-). She loves water and is in her element there. Here and here she is running in a stream. On hot days she also likes to cool off in the dog pool. She had a particular joy on an outing to the lake, where she was in her element in the water, as you can see here :-) Askana does not require any medication. However, she has a weakly muscled hindquarter and was probably not walked often. She is not always housetrained with us, which would need to be practiced in her new home. We do not know whether she can be left alone. If you are interested in Askana, please contact us at the shelter, and we will arrange contact with her family.

About Askana

What life with Askana looks like

Askana is an adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Bocholt in Bocholt.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Askana, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Askana?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Bocholt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Askana on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Askana if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Bocholt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Askana already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Askana isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Bocholt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Askana and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
